Η ΦΩΝΗ ΤΗΣ ΟΡΘΟΔΟΞΙΑΣ ΣΤΗΝ ΙΝΔΟΝΗΣΙΑ

Ανακοίνωση των Φίλων της Ιεραποστολής στην Ινδονησία-Αναστολή λειτουργίας Ιστολογίου.

Αγαπητοί εν Χριστώ αδελφοί.

Για μια ακόμα φορά δοξολογικές ευχαριστίες αναπέμπομε προς τον Δομήτορα της Εκκλησίας μας Ιησού Χριστό και στην Υπεραγία Θεοτόκο, που μας αξίωσαν να διακονήσουμε μέχρι σήμερα, από τα μετόπισθεν, την Ορθόδοξη Ιεραποστολή στην Ινδονησία .

Μια προσπάθεια που ξεκίνησε ερασιτεχνικά πριν δέκα χρόνια και με την βοήθεια του διαδικτύου έγινε ευρύτερα γνωστή, τα τελευταία τρία χρόνια.

Α. OI ΦΙΛΟΙ ΤΗΣ ΟΡΘΟΔΟΞΗΣ ΙΕΡΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΗΣ ΣΤΗΝ ΙΝΔΟΝΗΣΙΑ.

Η Ομάδα Φίλων της Ορθόδοξης Ιεραποστολής στην Ινδονησία ξεκίνησε από την πόλη της Άρτας, διευρύνθηκε δε με την βοήθεια του διαδικτύου πανελλαδικά από τον Μάρτιο του 2008, όταν ξεκίνησε να λειτουργεί το ιστολόγιο -Η ΦΩΝΗ ΤΗΣ ΟΡΘΟΔΟΞΙΑΣ ΣΤΗΝ ΙΝΔΟΝΗΣΙΑ.

Βασικός σκοπός της ομάδας αυτής ήταν η προβολή του ποικίλου και τεράστιου Ιεραποστολικού έργου στην Ινδονησία και η οικονομική ενίσχυση του φιλανθρωπικού έργου των Ιεραποστολικών κλιμακίων, κυρίως φτωχών, που δεν είχαν οικονομικές ενισχύσεις από Ελληνικούς Ιεραποστολικούς συλλόγους.

Γνωρίζουμε πολύ καλά ότι «η ανάπτυξις ενός πολυδιαστάτου κοινωνικού καί φιλανθρωπικού έργου ἀποτελεί απαραίτητον προϋπόθεσιν επιτυχίας της ιεραποστολικής και πνευματικής δραστηριότητος.Η αντιμετώπισις πρωτίστως των βασικών αναγκών του λαού αποτελεί έμπρακτον επιβεβαίωσιν του Ευαγγελίου καί γονιμοποιεί το έδαφος δια την καρποφορίαν του θείου λόγου. Αντιθέτως, η αδιαφορία δια τας ανάγκας αυτού απομακρύνει τον λαόν από της Εκκλησίας.»(Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης Βαρθολομαίος)

Δεν είχαμε την οικονομική δυνατότητα ενός μεγάλου Ιεραποστολικού συλλόγου, επειδή οι διάφοροι δωρητές μας είναι άνθρωποι με χαμηλά εισοδήματα, χαμηλόμισθοι και χαμηλοσυνταξιούχοι.

Όμως η αγάπη μας για την Ιεραποστολή και η εμπιστοσύνη στην Θεία Πρόνοια μας άνοιγε δρόμους και κατορθώσαμε με τις μικρές μας δυνάμεις να ενισχύσουμε οικονομικά φιλανθρωπικές δραστηριότητες, που καταγράφηκαν κατά καιρούς σε σχετικές δημοσιεύσεις στο παραπάνω ιστολόγιο.

Για το φιλανθρωπικό έργο της Ιεραποστιολής διαθέσαμε και τα έσοδα από την κυκλοφορία των δύο Θεομητορικών μας βιβλίων -Η ΥΠΕΡΕΥΛΟΓΗΜΕΝΗ και –Η ΠΑΝΤΩΝ ΑΝΑΣΣΑ-Φανερώσεις και θαύματα της Θεοτόκου.

Αποφύγαμε να εμπλακούμε σε δραστηριότητες καθαρά εκκλησιαστικές (π.χ. ανεγέρσεις ναών ), γιατί δεν θέλαμε να εμπλακούμε σε θέματα που αφορούσαν την αρμόδια εκκλησιαστική Αρχή και έπρεπε να ακολουθήσουμε τις πρακτικές εκείνες που προβλέπονται από την Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησιολογία .

(Εξαίρεση στον παραπάνω κανόνα αποτελεί η συγκέντρωση του ποσού των 5700 ευρώ, με σκοπό την ανέγερση του Ιερού ναού της Αγίας Αικατερίνης στο Cilacap. Το παραπάνω ποσό το στείλαμε από τον Δεκέμβριο του 2010 στην Μητρόπολη Χόνγκ-Κόνγκ και όπως μας διαβεβαίωσε επανειλημμένα ο Μητροπολίτης Χόνγκ-Κόνγκ θα αξιοποιηθουν όταν δημιουργηθούν οι καταλληλες προυποθέσεις στην περιοχή.)

Tο ιστολόγιο –Η ΦΩΝΗ ΤΗΣ ΟΡΘΟΔΟΞΙΑΣ ΣΤΗΝ ΙΝΔΟΝΗΣΙΑ.

Το ιστολόγιο αυτό δημιουργήθηκε τον Μάρτιο του 2008 και ξεκίνησε να λειτουργεί την 20^η Μαρτίου 2008. Στον διαδικτυακό χώρο, αποτέλεσε μέχρι τώρα το ΜΟΝΑΔΙΚΟ που ασχολήθηκε με την συγκεκριμένη Ορθόδοξη Ιεραποστολή του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου ,αφού τα περισσότερα δίνουν μεγαλύτερη έμφαση στην Ορθόδοξη Ιεραποστολή στην Αφρική. Στην διάρκεια των τριάμισι και πλέον χρόνων λειτουργίας δημοσιεύτηκαν 530 αναρτήσεις με ιεραποστολικά θέματα με πάρα πολλές φωτογραφίες και τα τελευταία δύο χρόνια το επισκέφτηκαν 85340 άτομα. Διαπιστώσαμε δε, με μεγάλη μας χαρά, ότι το συγκεκριμένο ιστολόγιο ήταν πηγή ενημέρωσης και για ιεραποστολικά περιοδικά.

Β.Σύντομος απολογισμός του έργου των Φίλων της Ιεραποστολής στην Ινδονησία

Ενισχύσαμε, με χρηματικά ποσά που στέλναμε κατά καιρούς στα αντίστοιχα ιεραποστολικά κλιμάκια.

1. Tην ιεραποστολή στο νησί Νίας με την αγορά φαρμάκων για την αντιμετώπιση της μαλάριας(ελονοσίας), που είναι η κυριότερη αιτία θανάτου των παιδιών και την αγορά εκπαιδευτικού υλικού για τα φτωχά και ορφανά παιδιά, που φοιτούν στα σχολεία της Ιεραποστολής εκεί.

2.Το οικοτροφείο –ΑΓΙΟΣ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΣ στο Μεντάν.

3.Τους σεισμοπαθείς και ηφαιστειοπαθείς στην ευρύτερη περιοχή του Boyolali της Ιάβας.(αγορά φαρμάκων και τροφίμων)

4.Το Ορθόδοξο Νηπιαγωγείο στο Καρανγκσόνο Boyolali Iάβας.(αγορά εκπαιδευτικού υλικού-μισθοδοσία προσωπικού )

5.Τους πλημμυροπαθείς στην περιοχή Gunung Gedangan της Ανατολικής Ιάβας.(κατασκευή κατοικιών)

6.Το φιλανθρωπικό έργο: των π.Ματθαίου στο Cilacap, π.Υοhanes στο Mojekerto, π.Λαζάρου στο Semarang της Κεντρικής Ιάβας, του π.Τιμοθέου στο περιοχή Gunung Gedangan της Ανατολικής Ιάβας.

7.Το οικοτροφείο –ΑΓΙΟΣ ΘΩΜΑΣ του π.Στεφάνου Boik Nino στην Singaraja (Μπαλί ).

Επίσης με ενέργειες μας καθώς και με αποστολή χρηματικών ποσών

1Αντιμετωπίστηκαν σοβαρά προβλήματα υγείας προσώπων που εργάζονται στην Ορθόδοξη Ιεραποστολή στην Ινδονησία.

2.Αγοράστηκε το οικόπεδο δίπλα στο Ορθόδοξο Νηπιαγωγείο στο Boyolali ,για το οποίο ενδιαφερόταν πλούσιος Μουσουλμάνος της περιοχής.

Τέλος

1.Με πλήρη χρηματοδότηση των Φίλων της Ιεραποστολής από την Ελλάδα κατασκευάστηκαν πέντε(5) διαμερίσματα, όπου διαμένουν φτωχές οικογένειες σεισμοπαθών στην περιοχή Boyolali

2.Συγκεντρώσαμε με έρανο το ποσό των 5700 ευρώ ,για την ανέγερση του Ιερού Ναού της Αγίας Αικατερίνης στο Cilacap και στάλθηκε το ποσό αυτό στην Ιερά Μητρόπολη Χόνγκ-Κόνγκ, όπως προβλέπεται για την κατασκευή εκκλησιαστικών έργων.

3.Χρηματοδοτήσαμε την εκτύπωση πεντακοσίων φυλλαδίων της Θείας Λειτουργίας του Αγίου Ιωάννου του Χρυσοστόμου στην διάλεκτο Βahasa.

4.Η ομάδα των Φίλων της Ιεραποστολής από την Ξάνθη ανέλαβε τα έξοδα βάπτισης των νεοφωτίστων τον περασμένο Μάιο στο Boyollali.

Γ.Η προσπάθεια ενίσχυσης του Ιεραποστολικού έργου στην Ινδονησία, δεν ήταν εύκολη και η μέχρι τώρα πορεία μας είχε αρκετές δυσκολίες και εμπόδια. Μερικές φορές παρεξηγήθηκε η πρωτοβουλία ενίσχυσης του ιεραποστολικού έργου και ασκήθηκαν πιέσεις και έμμεσες απειλές να σταματήσει κάθε προσπάθεια. Όμως με την βοήθεια του Θεού και τις απαραίτητες εξηγήσεις που δόθηκαν, τα εμπόδια αυτά ξεπεράστηκαν.

Δ.Η ενασχόλησή μας με τα διάφορα ιεραποστολικά κλιμάκια στην Ινδονησία, μας έδωσε την δυνατότητα να γνωρίσουμε και να προβάλλουμε ένα τεράστιο ιεραποστολικό έργο, στην μεγαλύτερη μουσουλμανική χώρα του κόσμου.

Θαυμάσαμε και πολλές φορές ελεγχθήκαμε από τον γνήσιο ζήλο και το θυσιαστικό πνεύμα των ορθόδοξων κληρικών, που πολλές φορές και με κίνδυνο της ζωής των κήρυτταν Χριστό, σε περιοχές που φανατικοί ισλαμιστές δημιουργούσαν σοβαρότατα προβλήματα με ποικίλες πρακτικές και διωγμούς.

Ε.Όμως η ενασχόλησή μας αυτή με την Ιεραποστολή μας έφερε στο προσκήνιο γεγονότα, πληροφορίες, πρακτικές και καταστάσεις, που αρκετές φορές μας προβλημάτισαν .

Οι προβληματισμοί μας αυτοί διατυπυπώθηκαν αρκετές φορές γραπτά σε ιδιωτικό επίπεδο επικοινωνίας με κάποιους ιεραποστόλους της περιοχής, με σκοπό να αρχίσει ένας επικοδομητικός διάλογος .

Όμως δυστυχώς η επικοινωνία αυτή συνάντησε την στείρα άρνηση και απόρριψη και ως εκ τούτου δεν έφερε αποτελέσματα .

Έτσι αποφασίσαμε πλέον να σιωπήσουμε και να κρατήσουμε τις δέουσες αποστάσεις, ώστε ούτε να υπάρξει ο κίνδυνος παρεξήγησης, ούτε να κατηγορηθούμε ότι παρεμβαίνουμε στα εσωτερικά των ιεραποστολικών κλιμακίων, με αφορμή την ποικίλη ενασχόλησή μας με την Ορθόδοξη Ιεραποστολή στην περιοχή. Διαπιστώσαμε με μεγάλη μας λύπη, ότι αρκετές φορές αντιμετωπιστήκαμε από ορισμένους Ινδονήσιους Ιεραποστόλους σαν οικονομικοί χορηγοί και μόνο της Ιεραποστολής .

Αξιολογήσαμε την κατάσταση που διαμορφώθηκε μέχρι σήμερα και ωθούμενοι από την πρωτοφανή οικονομική κρίση, που ταλαιπωρεί το σύνολο του Ελληνικού λαού αποφασίσαμε αρχικά τον Ιούνιο του 2011:

1. Να αναστείλουμε κάθε προσπάθεια για οικονομική βοήθεια προς τα Ορθόδοξα Ιεραποστολικά κλιμάκια της Ινδονησίας

2.Το ιστολόγιο -Η ΦΩΝΗ ΤΗΣ ΟΡΘΟΔΟΞΙΑΣ ΣΤΗΝ ΙΝΔΟΝΗΣΙΑ να συνεχίσει να λειτουργεί « άχρι καιρού», προβάλλοντας μόνο το Ιεραποστολικό έργο στην περιοχή, αλλάζοντας όμως μορφή και θεματολογία.

ΣΤ.Βέβαια οι προβληματισμοί μας για την διαμορφωμένη κατάσταση, στον χώρο της Ορθόδοξης Ιεραποστολής στην περιοχή, υπήρχαν και υπάρχουν και μετά από εκτενείς συζητήσεις αποφασίσαμε τελικά να σταματήσουμε κάθε δραστηριότητα, που έχει σχέση με την Ορθόδοξη Ιεραποστολή του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου στην περιοχή της Ινδονησίας.

Συγκεκριμένα αποφασίσαμε:

1.Να αναστείλουμε την λειτουργία του ιστολογίου –Η ΦΩΝΗ ΤΗΣ ΟΡΘΟΔΟΞΙΑΣ ΣΤΗΝ ΙΝΔΟΝΗΣΙΑ.

2.Να συνεχίσουμε να προβάλλουμε και να ενισχύουμε, όσο μπορούμε και άλλες Ορθόδοξες Ιεραποστολές και των άλλων Ορθόδοξων Πατριαρχείων σε διάφορα μέρη του κόσμου.

3.Να οργανώσουμε το ιστολόγιο –Η ΟΡΘΟΔΟΞΗ ΜΑΡΤΥΡΙΑ ΣΤΑ ΣΥΓΧΡΟΝΑ ΕΘΝΗ - που θα μας βοηθήσει στην νέα μας προσπάθεια .

Ζ.Με μεγάλη χαρά δεχτήκαμε την απόφαση του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου, να εκλέξει τον πρώτο Μητροπολίτη Σιγκαπούρης, ώστε η Ορθόδοξη Ιεραποστολή να οργανωθεί καλύτερα στην περιοχή της Ινδονησίας και της Νοτιοανατολικής Ασίας.

Μία καινούργια σελίδα ανοίγεται πλέον για την εκκλησιαστική ιστορία.

Ευχόμαστε με την σειρά μας στον νέο Μητροπολίτη καλή διακονία στον Αμπελώνα της Νοτιοανατολικής Ασίας, που του εμπιστεύτηκε ο Κύριος, ώστε το πνεύμα και το ήθος της Ορθοδοξίας να εξαπλωθεί περισσότερο στην περιοχή .

Να σταματήσουν τα μίση και οι διχόνοιες που δημιούργησαν ανθρώπινα λάθη του παρελθόντος και που ταλαιπωρούν και προβληματίζουν τους εκεί Ορθοδόξους, να ανθήσει ο Ορθόδοξος μοναχισμός, να αναδειχθούν και να χειροτονηθούν και άλλοι ιερείς, που θα μεταφέρουν το μήνυμα του Ευαγγελίου του Χριστού σε καινούργια μέρη, ώστε η ορθόδοξη ιεραποστολή να συνεχίσει το σωτήριο έργο του Ευαγγελισμού των ανθρώπων, μακριά από προτεσταντικές και συγκρητιστικές πρακτικές και μεθοδολογίες.

Τέλος δε να υπενθυμίσουμε στον νέο Μητροπολίτη την ύπαρξη του ποσού των 5700 ευρώ, που συγκεντρώθηκε από το υστέρημα δωρητών της Ιεραποστολής και υπάρχει στο ταμείο της Μητρόπολης Χόνγκ-Κόνγκ, ώστε να χρησιμοποιηθεί για την ανέγερση του ναού της Αγίας Αικατερίνης στο Cilacap, όταν υπάρξουν οι κατάλληλες συνθήκες.

Τhe Nativity of our Most Holy Lady the Mother of God and Ever-Virgin Mary

The Nativity of Our Most Holy Lady Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary: The Most Holy Virgin Mary was born at a time when people had reached such a degree of moral decay that it seemed altogether impossible to restore them. People often said that God must come into the world to restore faith and not permit the ruin of mankind.

The Son of God chose to take on human nature for the salvation of mankind, and chose as His Mother the All-Pure Virgin Mary, who alone was worthy to give birth to the Source of purity and holiness.

The Nativity of Our Most Holy Lady Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary is celebrated by the Church as a day of universal joy. Within the context of the Old and the New Testaments, the Most Blessed Virgin Mary was born on this radiant day, having been chosen before the ages by Divine Providence to bring about the Mystery of the Incarnation of the Word of God. She is revealed as the Mother of the Savior of the World, Our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Most Holy Virgin Mary was born in the small city of Galilee, Nazareth. Her parents were Righteous Joachim of the tribe of the Prophet-King David, and Anna from the tribe of the First Priest Aaron. The couple was without child, since St Anna was barren.

Having reached old age, Joachim and Anna did not lose hope in God’s mercy. They had strong faith that for God everything is possible, and that He would be able to overcome the barrenness of Anna even in her old age, as He had once overcame the barrenness of Sarah, spouse of the Patriarch Abraham. Sts Joachim and Anna vowed to dedicate the child which the Lord might give them, to the service of God in the Temple.

Childlessness was considered among the Hebrew nation as a Divine punishment for sin, and therefore the righteous Sts Joachim and Anna had to endure abuse from their own countrymen. On one of the feastdays at the Temple in Jerusalem the elderly Joachim brought his sacrifice to offer to God, but the High Priest would not accept it, considering him to be unworthy since he was childless.

St Joachim in deep grief went into the wilderness, and there he prayed with tears to the Lord for a child. St Anna wept bitterly when she learned what had happened at the Jerusalem Temple. Never once did she complain against the Lord, but rather she prayed to ask God’s mercy on her family.

The Lord fulfilled her petitions when the pious couple had attained to extreme old age and prepared themselves by virtuous life for a sublime calling: to be the parents of the Most Holy Virgin Mary, the future Mother of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Archangel Gabriel brought Joachim and Anna the joyous message that their prayers were heard by God, and of them would be born a most blessed daughter Mary, through Whom would come the Salvation of all the World.

The Most Holy Virgin Mary surpassed in purity and virtue not only all mankind, but also the angels. She was manifest as the living Temple of God, so the Church sings in its festal hymns: “the East Gate… bringing Christ into the world for the salvation of our souls” (2nd Stikhera on “Lord, I Have Cried”, Tone 6).

The Nativity of the Theotokos marks the change of the times when the great and comforting promises of God for the salvation of the human race from slavery to the devil are about to be fulfilled. This event has brought to earth the grace of the Kingdom of God, a Kingdom of Truth, piety, virtue and everlasting life. The Theotokos is revealed to all of us by grace as a merciful Intercessor and Mother, to Whom we have recourse with filial devotion.

— A powerful earthquake jolted western Indonesia early Tuesday, killing three people, damaging buildings and sending panicked residents fleeing from homes, hotels and even a hospital.

The magnitude-6.6 quake hit about 1 a.m. (1800 GMT Monday), waking people in towns and villages across Sumatra island's northern tip.

It was centered 60 miles (100 kilometers) southwest of the city of Medan and 62 miles (110 kilometers) beneath the earth's crust, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was too far inland to generate a tsunami.

Maura Sakti, a mayor in Subulussalam, told local station TVOne a 12-year-old boy had been killed. At least one other person was injured.

Boby Sigit, an official at the National Disaster Management, said later that two people were killed in Aceh — the boy and a 60-year-old man — while a 26-year-old mother died in North Sumatra's district of Dairi. The boy and woman were killed by falling rubble and stones, while the man's cause of death was not clear.

About 50 houses, along with a number of mosques, churches and hospitals, were damaged by the earthquake, and more than 250 shops and kiosks caught fire, due to power problems, the disaster agency said.

Hundreds of people were evacuated to temporary shelters as authorities surveyed the damage, said Lt. Col. Helmy Kesuma, police chief in the hard-hit town of Singkil.

Some electricity poles were knocked down there, crashing into homes and causing blackouts.

"My wife was screaming, my children crying," said Burhan Mardiansyah, 37, a Singkil resident. "We saw our walls start to crack and everything inside the house was falling. Thank God we're all safe."

The panic extended to Medan, the sprawling provincial capital of North Sumatra, where hundreds of patients from at least one hospital had to be evacuated, some in wheelchairs or with IVs attached to their arms.

Hotels emptied and residents ran into the streets or the balconies of their rented homes, clutching babies to their chests.

Fearing aftershocks, many refused to go back inside for hours.

Indonesia straddles a series of fault lines that makes the vast island nation prone to volcanic and seismic activity.

Twin natural disasters almost a year ago killed about 700 people. Eruptions in Indonesia's most active volcano, Mount Merapi, killed more than 240 people last October and November.

And an earthquake Oct. 25 triggered a tsunami near the remote Mantawai islands off western Sumatra that killed more than 460 people and destroyed homes, mosques and other buildings.

A giant quake off the country on Dec. 26, 2004, triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed 230,000 people, half of them in Indonesia's westernmost province of Aceh.

Part 2: 'Creeping Genocide' against Christians

Open Doors compiles a global "persecution index." North Korea, where tens of thousands of Christians are serving time in work camps, has topped the list for many years. North Korea is followed, though, by Iran, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, the Maldives and Afghanistan. Of the first 10 countries on the list, eight are Islamic, and almost all have Islam as their state religion.

The systematic persecution of Christians in the 20th century -- by Communists in the Soviet Union and China, but also by Nazis -- claimed far more lives than anything that has happened so far in the 21st century. Now, however, it is not only totalitarian regimes persecuting Christians, but also residents of Islamic states, fanatical fundamentalists, and religious sects -- and often simply supposedly pious citizens.

Gone is the era of tolerance, when Christians enjoyed a large degree of religious freedom under the protection of Muslim sultans as so-called "People of the Book" while at the same time medieval Europe was banishing its Jews and Muslims from the continent or even burning them at the stake. Also gone is the heyday of Arab secularism following World War II, when Christian Arabs advanced through the ranks of politics.

As political Islam grew stronger, devout believers' aggression focused not only on corrupt local regimes, but also more and more on the ostensibly corrupting influence of Western Christians, for which local Christian minorities were held accountable. A new trend began, this time with Christians as the victims.

In Iraq, for example, Sunni terrorist groups prey specifically on people of other religions. The last Iraqi census in 1987 showed 1.4 million Christians living in the country. At the start of the American invasion in 2003, it was 550,000, and at present it is just under 400,000. Experts speak of a "creeping genocide."

'People Are Scared Out of Their Minds'

The situation in the region around the city of Mosul in northern Iraq is especially dramatic. The town of Alqosh lies high in the mountains above Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city. Bassam Bashir, 41, can see his old hometown when he looks out his window there. Mosul is only 40 kilometers (25 miles) away, but inaccessible. The city is more dangerous than Baghdad, especially for men like Bassam Bashir, a Chaldean Catholic, teacher and fugitive within his own country.

Since the day in August 2008 when a militia abducted his father from his shop, Bashir has had to fear for his and his family's lives. Police found his father's corpse two days later in the Sinaa neighborhood on the Tigris River, the body perforated with bullet holes. There was no demand for ransom. Bashir's father died for the simple reason that he was Christian.

And no one claims to have seen anything. "Of course they saw something," Bashir says. "But people in Mosul are scared out of their minds."

One week later, militiamen slit the throat of Bashir's brother Tarik like a sacrificial lamb. "I buried my brother myself," Bashir explains. Together with his wife Nafa and their two daughters, he fled to Alqosh the same day. The city is surrounded by vineyards and an armed Christian militia guards the entrance.

Tacit State Approval

Bashir's family members aren't the only ones who came to Alqosh as the series of murders in Mosul continued. Sixteen Christians were killed the next week, and bombs exploded in front of churches. Men in passing cars shouted at Christians that they had a choice -- leave Mosul or convert to Islam. Out of over 1,500 Christian families in the city, only 50 stayed. Bassam Bashir says he won't return until he can mourn for his father and brother in peace. Others who gave up hope entirely fled to neighboring countries like Jordan and even more to Syria.

In many Islamic countries, Christians are persecuted less brutally than in Iraq, but often no less effectively. In many cases, the persecution has the tacit approval of the government. In Algeria, for example, it takes the form of newspapers reporting that a priest tried to convert Muslims or insulted the Prophet Mohammed -- and publishing the cleric's address, in a clear call to vigilante justice. Or a public television station might broadcast programs with titles like "In the Clutches of Ignorance," which describe Christians as Satanists who convert Muslims with the help of drugs. This happened in Uzbekistan, which ranks tenth on Open Doors' "persecution index."

Blasphemy is another frequently used allegation. Insulting the core values of Islam is a punishable offense in many Islamic countries. The allegation is often used against the opposition, whether that means journalists, dissidents or Christians. Imran Masih, for example, a Christian shopkeeper in Faisalabad, Pakistan, was given a life sentence on Jan. 11, according to sections 295 A and B of Pakistan's legal code, which covers the crime of outraging religious feelings by desecrating the Koran. A neighboring shopkeeper had accused him of burning pages from the Koran. Masih says that he only burned old business records.

It's a typical case for Pakistan, where the law against blasphemy seems to invite abuse -- it's an easy way for anyone to get rid of an enemy. Last year, 125 Christians were charged with blasphemy in Pakistan. Dozens of those already sentenced are on death row.

Why I Left Islam

I was born in a moderate Shiite family in Punjab, eastern province of Pakistan . As it happens with almost every other Muslim male newborn, I underwent unscientific rituals based on religious traditions carried out on me, including Azaan in my ears on the very first day followed by circumcision and head shaving in the first week of my life. Both my grand mothers were very devout Shiites and Muslims, as we live in Pakistan in a closely knit family so the process of my brain washing started early by telling me about the greatness of Allah, the exalted morality of Prophet and all 12 Imams and the great sacrifice of Imam Hussain and his family to save Islam from falling into evil hands. A Shiite cleric was hired to teach me the recitation of the Quran and also Islamic and Shiite fundamentals who tried his best to instill in me the reverence to faith in Islam and Shiite sect in particular. At the age of ten I finished the recitation of the Quran twice and was done with the Cleric. I happened to watch “The Message” movie when I was about 8 and as Islam was depicted very positively in this Hollywood style scripted movie it left on me a positive impression of Islam.

Every year I used to go, with my mother and siblings, to attend Muharram rituals. The place where I went had a silver metallic imposter “Taziyah” of Imam Hussain’s shrine. People used to gather there for commemorating the deaths of the Imam and their family and for meeting up those relatives they only meet once a year. There were too many odd rituals happening there. Significant of those rituals included a horse ‘Zuljanah’ dressed as Imam’s horse coming in a courtyard housing the “Taziyah” and people holding their young ones moved these infants under the belly of the “sacred” horse, while other grown ups tried their best to be the first to touch the horse, so as not to miss out on the blessings coming from heaven in form of the horse. The other event which I never liked to watch was a display of masochism and in some cases sadism. This event called “Zanjir Zani” where people used to hit their backs with a set of long blades to go out of the way to prove that they stand nearer and higher in terms of religious piety and feel the tragedy more by hurting themselves. In the same event some of the sadistic people coerced and coaxed their young children who are not mature enough to decide for themselves (at the age of five) to start practicing this insane ritual. After seeing this appalling ritual I started questioning the validity of such sickening practices. That was the first time I questioned anything about my religion.

Time went on and the brain washing process continued in the school. This was done in many ways. I’ll mention a few of those here. Islamic studies were made a mandatory subject by the corrupt and dictatorial Zia regime. Young children minds including myself were therefore infected by presenting them with a heavily biased picture of utopian Islam and its perfect and exemplary Prophet and his followers. Also some of the more conservative teachers tried their best to instill hatred against the Jews and all infidels while glorifying the acts of Muslim warriors. Some of them gave incentives to students if they had offered morning prayers. In the month of fasting, people who weren’t fasting were embarrassed by their fellow students and teachers and the ones who fasted were highly praised. It was told by some of the teachers that Imam Ali’s best fasting days were the hottest and longest. Also some of the fabricated hadith were also used to show how progressive Islam was e.g. “Seek knowledge even if you have to go to China ” etc. So this kind of environment was prevalent in our school.

The major balancing force in this entire one sided world of Islam was my father. He had an opportunity to go to US to get his MS degree and during his time he was able to understand the western values and why some of those values should be used to bring up his children. He himself was not a very devout Muslim but still went to the two Eid prayers and participated fully in the last 3 days of Ashura (8-10th of Muharram). So I was never forced to say prayers or asked to go to mosque nor do any religious activity. I fasted and prayed on my own will, thanks to the brain washing done for a quarter century. During this time I felt the plight of women in the country, how they are superficially respected but actually have no real rights on their own i.e. they can’t take divorce by themselves as men do. They can’t prove rape. They can’t do anything if a man marries another woman. They get less in inheritance and they are considered imbecile by the Islamic law to have half the witness of a man no matter how much more educated they are compared to the male witness. I always thought if I were born a girl i.e. had an X chromosome in my DNA rather than Y it would have sealed my fate for ever and that didn’t seem to me to be any justice. I also thought about the paradox of free will and determination and both of them lead to the conclusion that God cannot be omniscient and if God is omniscient and can predict our every future move then we are just dummies as we’ll be doing what God already knows and that means he had decided to put people in heaven and hell right from their birth.

With these questions still unanswered in my mind I left Pakistan and came to US to do my MS. Luckily I got the privilege to be at a premier institution, so I was able to make some friends from my country with whom I can have open intellectual discussions about these issues. Also I got more awareness about the Taliban and their cruel regime and the problems Afghan women are facing there. I thought at that point of time that Taliban are not following true Islam and they have invented their own version of Islam to take control of the war battered region. So when Taliban smashed Bamiyan Buddha statue I was shocked at the barbarism of these Taliban and it encouraged me to do more research on Islam. Then 9/11 came and I was so distressed at the insanity of these so called martyrs. These incidents filled me with grief and shame as I thought that people who have the same religion as mine are doing all these horrendous acts in the name of religion.

The first major blow that shattered my faith was when I got to know about the slavery of women, men and children and how women slaves were treated and what happened to the women of neighboring non Muslim countries. So after doing more research I got definite proof from the Islamic sources that slavery was prevalent and practiced by early Muslims. I tried to read the explanations given by the apologists but none of them satisfied me. I always held human and especially women rights in high esteem and slavery of women seem to me as an extreme violation of those rights and I thought that no divine religion can do that. So to satisfy myself I came to the conclusion that these haditha written after more than 2 centuries must be corrupted so I thought I should only consider Islam based on the Quran rather than these hadiths.

Two years back I read Bertrand Russell’s essays on religion and those opened my eyes. Being disgusted by the human rights in Islam I instantly moved away from Islam and stopped praying and fasting and due to my lack of Quranic knowledge I postponed the religious matters to be considered later when I have some time available for myself to seek the truth about it.

The final tipping point came about six months ago when I watched the movie Alexander. I just thought to look up the real history of Alexander and then some how came to know about the information in Wikipedia and an article in FFI site. I was deeply shocked and angered to know that Quranic verse on Alexander is borrowed from Alexander’s Romance and also that Quran considered Earth flat due to misconception of Greeks during that time. Once I saw FFI website I kept on reading the articles and found them highly logical and authentic, while the arguments presented by the apologists were full of fallacies that carry no weight. I felt a lot of anger for being made a fool by the society around me for so many years. I still feel lucky that I got out of this “black hole” as most of the people are incapable of doing that.

I was feeling a strong urge to write my testimonial for quite some time so I finally sat down today to accomplish this task to let others know if they are still following Islam, how much darkness they are in. I personally want to thank Mr. Ali Sina and all the authors who have written articles for FFI as they are spending their precious time for a very noble cause of enlightening people and showing them the correct path. Now I’m of the opinion that everything that was shown as a good aspect of Islam to me can be countered by egregiously bad deeds done by the Prophet and his partners, which tells me how much hypocrisy is present in the Islamic teachings.

Why Allah cannot be a God

If you are a Muslim and can tell me why Allah is a God, please read my FAQ, and if your question is not answered there, contact me. I will answer your question and will include it in my FAQ section.

There are many reasons why Allah cannot be a God:

1) Quran shows no signs of being a divine book.

This can be subdivided into:

a) There are no miracles in Quran, and thus no sign that men or man could not have created this book.

b) Instead, Quran has wrong science in it, and wrong moral ideas.

c) If Quran was truely from God, it would contain knowledge that we are not aware of yet. You think Quran has science? Read about the pre-Islamic scientific World and the wonderful scientists who were born before Islam came. If Quran wanted to convey science, why did it not convey all the science we know of? Instead, it conveyed either common sense, OR ideas stolen from Greek scientists. There is every reason I can give to tell you how Mohammed stole from Greeks. Remember, you do not have to be educated to hear a scientists knowledge from far-away lands, and lie to people around you to claim the scientific knowledge as "revealed" from God!

Thus the claim that Mohammed was not educated and could not have known all this, is FALSE!

d) A real God would not allow his important message to be taken in a wrong way:

Quran is supposed to be an important message for humanity, rioght. If Quran was an important message to humanity from a real God, its Creator would have made SURE that the message would not be taken in a wrong way. The day is coming when more and more people are hating Islam. Assuming that Quran was from God, it is unfortunate to be born in such an era, where this important message of God is being hated so much.

Would the real creator (if he exists) allow any of His dear creation to be born in a place where His message was being hated so much, and thus not receive the message in the correct context? Ofcourse not.

The message of a Real God to his creation, would be very important and there would be NO one who would be able to tarnish the clean image of his message.

We have sane people finding faults with Quran and talking about using it as toilet paper. Would a real God allow this to happen to his message?

Not if he thought his message was important!

God wants to test us? For what? Are we the guineu pigs of the Universe? No, we're not! God doesnt even have any rights on us!

e) God would never declare his previous messages to be false, and only the latest one(Islam) to be true.

A real God would NEVER say this:

"And if any believe not in Allah and His Messenger, We have prepared, for those who reject Allah, a Blazing Fire!" -Quran 48:13

This verse is clearly talking about Islam and not just any Messenger or religion. There is another verse which says that "no religion will be accepted of man except Islam". (3:85).

f) A real God would not violate our rights.

Besides the above reasons, there is another logical explanation of why Allah cannot be a God.

Allah is a God who becomes offended if you abuse or disobey him. What kind of weak God is that?

Here is an explanation, of why:

1) God cannot be offended when man abuses him. 2) Allah cannot be a true god. I will present two approaches to prove this. First, I will prove by logical reasoning that Allah cannot be a God. Then, I will present an analogy to support my claim further.

2) Logical Reasoning

God is supposed to be an infinitely powerful being. It is not possible to have any power or influence over an infinitely powerful being. It is not possible to effect God in any way.

I cannot make God angry, niether can I make him happy. If I could make God happy or angry, it would mean that I have some control over God's emotions. Thus, I would have some control over God. But such a God, whose emotions (anger) I can control, cannot be a God. When even a billion blackholes, which have the power to bend light, due to enormous gravitational attraction, cannot effect God, then can I, a 65 Kg man, effect God in any way? No.Now, let us study Allah, the God of Muslims. A muslim is told to worship Allah and praise him. Allah created man to worship him (Q:51.56). We know that Allah will punish all those who dont believe in him Quran 48.13 "And if any believe not in Allah and His Messenger, We have prepared, for those who reject Allah, a Blazing Fire!" Thus, if Allah will punish anyone who does'nt believe in him, he will also punish anyone who abuses him. But if Allah punishes anyone who abuses him, it means that Allah is offended when a human abuses him. This means that a human being can offend Allah, by either disobeying his orders, or abusing him. If a human can offend Allah, it means that the human being has control over Allah's emotions. A human being has control over Allah's anger and thus has partial control over Allah. But we know from our earlier discussion, that a being cannot be a God, if its emotions can be controlled by a human being.

Note: Abusing another human is a different matter, because a human can be effected by abuse, since she/he is not infinitely powerful, as God is. It makes sense to say that if God existed, he would provide justice to all those who were abused in any way, and would give punishment to those who abused the humans. BUT, God would not be angry at the criminals. The role of a good judge is to provide justice, without being effected by hate or anger, induced by the criminal. If Allah can become angry due to a human abusing him, the rule of Allah being the strongest entity is violated. Conclusion: Allah, the God of Muslims, can not be a God. Now I will present an analogy to make this explanation more clear.

Analogy

A guy whom we shall call 'X', is doing a study on social behaviors, decides to do an experiment. He wants to see the reaction of abuse on different types of people. He goes out on a street to meet people and chooses one guy whom he calls 'A'.

X says some verbal abuse and racial remarks to 'A'. But 'A' is a cool-headed guy and does not mind the abuse. Instead, he thinks to himself, that this guy must be insane. 'A' does not let his anger grow and just looks on to 'X' with amusement and raises his eyebrows and then ignores ‘X’, thinking its nothing to be serious about. X notes down the reaction of 'A' in his research journal and walks away to find another guy, whom he calls 'B'. Now, ‘B’ is a hot headed guy, who can become angry on the smallest of things. ‘X’ calls him some verbal abuse along with racial remarks. ‘B’'s anger shoots up very quickly and his blood begins to boil. He starts abusing ‘X’ in return, making even bigger and more vulgar abuse to ‘X’, telling him to '#$^@ off'. ‘B’ starts coming near ‘X’ and it looks like hes ready to punch X in the face. Before ‘B’ can do that, ‘X’ runs away for his life and disappears.

His study is complete. Which person, 'A' or 'B', has the greater character strength ? If you were to choose a leader for a group, who would you choose between 'A' and 'B' ? The vast majority of people would chose 'A' as the leader, who has more strong character, and has proven to be more resistant to attacks than ‘B’. Lets transfer this example to God’s. Suppose there are two God's.

One of them is God ‘B’, who is a sensitive God and for him, its easy to become angry when a human abuses him. So down on the planet, there is a man who abuses God B. God B becomes angry and he plans to punish the human for what he did. The God plans to burn the human and give him all sorts of pain when he dies. The other God, called God A, is cool-headed and when He sees a human being abuse Him, He doesn't mind, because his ego is not so sensitive as that of God B. God A loves humans unconditionally and infinitely. When He sees the human abuse Him, he thinks to himself that this human might be crazy and he forgives that human. He knows that abuse doesn't effect him. He still loves the human, and he knows that a human cannot harm Him in any way. When the human will die, he will see for himself, how loving God is.

So God A says to himself : “Nevermind, he's a human, my loved creation, it doesn’t matter to me if he believes in me or not. His belief or disbelief does not effect ME because I have infinite power over all things. I cannot be effected by even a million black holes, let alone a 65 kg 5’6” tall human, who will live only 70 years.” Which of the Gods, A or B, is more strong and loving ? Which of God do you think rules the universe?

A large majority of the people would choose God 'A', the one who is not affected by human abuse or love and loves his creation infinitely. If Allah is infinite in power, he is infinite in strength of personal character. If Allah can become angry due to a human abusing him, the rule of Allah being the strongest entity is violated.

Conclusion:

God, if exists, does not and cannot become angry when a human praises/abuses him. Thus, Allah, the god of Muslims, who can be offended by abuse, can NOT be a true god.

Ο 38χρονος Arshed Masih, εξακολουθεί να μάχεται για τη ζωή του στο Νοσοκομείο ‘Holy Family’ στο Ραβαλπίντι, μία πόλη που δεν απέχει πολύ από την πρωτεύουσα του Πακιστάν.

Με τη βοήθεια της αστυνομίας, μουσουλμάνοι εξτρεμιστές την περασμένη Παρασκευή τον πυρπόλησαν επειδή αρνήθηκε να ασπαστεί το Ισλάμ και βίασαν τη γυναίκα του, ανέφεραν οι τοπικές πηγές στο AsiaNews.

Το περιστατικό συνέβη μπροστά από ένα τοπικό αστυνομικό τμήμα.

Το 2005, Masih και η σύζυγός του άρχισαν να εργάζονται για ένανπάμπλουτο μουσουλμάνο επιχειρηματία, ως οδηγός εκείνος και ως καμαριέρα η σύζυγός του. Πρόσφατα και οι δύο έπεσαν σε δυσμένεια από τον εργοδότη τους και την οικογένειά του γιατί επέμεναν να παραμένουν χριστιανοί.

Κατά τη διάρκεια του συμβάντος, η γυναίκα του Masih, η Μάρθα,"βιάστηκε από πράκτορες της αστυνομίας," ανέφεραν τοπικές πηγές. Τα τρία παιδιά του ζευγαριού, ηλικίας από 7 έως 12 ετών, τα υποχρέωσαν να παρακολουθούν τους γονείς τους να κακοποιούνται βάναυσα.

Ο Masih και η σύζυγός του βρίσκονται τώρα στο νοσοκομείο, ‘Αγία Οικογένεια’ όπως ανέφερε κάποιος υπάλληλος του Νοσοκομείου. Την Κυριακή, η κυβέρνηση του Πουντζάμπ ανακοίνωσε ότι θα προβεί σε έρευνα σχετικά με το τι συνέβη. "Το θέμα θα διερευνηθεί και οι ένοχοι θα συλληφθούν," είπε ο Υπουργός Δικαιοσύνης της επαρχίας Πουντζάμπ, Rana Sanaullah.

Ο Arshed προσφέρθηκε να εγκαταλείψει την εργασία του, αλλά ο επιχειρηματίας φέρεται να του είπε ότι θα τον "σκοτώσει" αν κάνει να φύγει.

Την περασμένη εβδομάδα, οι εντάσεις αυξήθηκαν όταν ο Σουλτάνος ανέφερε κλοπή των 500.000 πακιστανικών ρουπιών (περίπου US $ 6.000), και ακολούθησε επίσημη καταγγελία στην αστυνομία.

Αν και το χριστιανικό ζευγάρι δεν ονομάστηκε ως ύποπτο, ο επιχειρηματίας τους πρότεινε ότι θα ξεχάσει την υπόθεση αν ασπαζόντουσαν το Ισλάμ, "αλλιώς και οι δύο δεν θα έβλεπαν τα παιδιά τους ξανά."

Pakistani Christian couple refuses to convert: husband is burnt alive, wife raped by police

Islamabad (AsiaNews) – Arshed Masih, 38, is still fighting for his life in Holy Family Hospital in Rawalpindi, a city not far from Pakistan’s capital. With the help of police, Muslim extremists last Friday set him on fire for refusing to convert to Islam and raped his wife, local sources toldAsiaNews. The incident occurred in front of a local police station.

In 2005, Masih and his wife began working for a wealthy Muslim businessman, he as driver and she as his wife’s maid. Recently, the two fell out of favour with their employer and his family because they insisted on remaining Christian.

During the incident, Masih’s wife, Martha, “was raped by police agents,” local sources said. The couple’s three children, ranging in age from 7 and 12, were forced to watch their parents being brutalised.

“Masih and his wife are currently being treated in hospital,” Holy Family Hospital officials said. “He was listed in serious condition with about 80 per cent of his body burned,” the BosNewsLife agency reported. With that kind of burns, hospital officials said the 38-year-old victim (pictured) is not likely to survive.

On Sunday, the Government of Punjab government announced an investigation into what happened. “The matter will be investigated and the culprits will be arrested,” Punjab’s Minister of Law Rana Sanaullah said.

The Christian couple lived with their children in the servant quarters of Sheikh Mohammad Sultan’s estate in Rawalpindi. In January, religious leaders and Sultan reportedly told Arshed to convert to Islam with his whole family. After he refused, they threatened him with "dire consequences".

Arshed offered to quit his job, but the businessman allegedly said he would "kill" him if he were to leave.

Last week, tensions rose after Sultan reported the theft of 500,000 Pakistani rupees (almost US$ 6,000), and an official complaint (First Information Report) was filed with police.

Although the Christian couple was not named as suspect, the businessman offered them to drop the case if they converted to Islam or "else that both would not see their children again."

The rest is known. Arshed Masih chose to remain loyal to his Christian faith, and last Friday he was set on fire and his wife raped by police.

Federal Minority Minister Shahbaz Batti, a Catholic, has so far refused to make any comment because he was “busy”. He did say however, that he would issue a statement in the next few days.

Christian organisations in Rawalpindi and Lahore planned protests for today.

Τα ιερά κείμενα πρεσβεύουν το σεβασμό στο φυσικό περιβάλλον και τα ζώα; Κάποιοι θρησκευτικοί ταγοί από τη μουσουλμανική Σουμάτρα της Ινδονησίας πιστεύουν πως το Κοράνι το κάνει.

Στην Ινδονησία, χώρα με τους υψηλότερους ρυθμούς αποδάσωσης παγκοσμίως, αλλά και πολύ σημαντική βιοποικιλότητα, ορισμένοι μουσουλμάνοι ηγέτες θεωρούν ότι η θρησκεία είναι το κλειδί για την προστασία του περιβάλλοντος.

Η οργάνωση FORDALING (Islamic Leader Forum for Environmental Care) ισχυρίζεται πως το Κοράνι μιλάει ευθέως για την ανάγκη προστασίας του φυσικού περιβάλλοντος και οργανώνει προγράμματα εκπαίδευσης μουσουλμάνων ιερέων.

Επίσης, συμμετέχει σε εκπαιδευτικές και άλλες δράσεις με σκοπό την κινητοποίηση του βαθιά θρησκευόμενου μουσουλμανικού πληθυσμού της Σουμάτρας για την προστασία της πλούσιας βιοποικιλότητας της περιοχής.

Μάλιστα, η FORDALING εξέδωσε βιβλίο με τίτλο “Ισλαμικοί στίχοι για τη διατήρηση του φυσικού περιβάλλοντος” με το οποίο αποσκοπεί στην ευαισθητοποίηση του μουσουλμανικού πληθυσμού σχετικά με περιβαλλοντικά θέματα.

Τα κεφάλαια του βιβλίου φέρουν τίτλους όπως “Γη, το κοινό μας σπίτι”, “Η προστασία της Φύσης στον καιρό του Προφήτη Μωάμεθ” και “Οι αγαθοεργίες του Μωάμεθ για την προστασία της άγριας ζωής”.

Μέσα από αυτά τα κείμενα επιχειρείται μια σύνδεση των ιερών στίχων του Κορανίου με τα σύγχρονα περιβαλλοντικά προβλήματα που αντιμετωπίζει τόσο η Ινδονησία όσο και το σύνολο του πλανήτη.

The bishops of Old Rome, beside small and non-essential differences, always held communion with the bishops of New Rome(Constantinople) and the bishops of the East until the years 1009-1014, when, for the first time, the Frankish bishops seized the throne of Old Rome. Until the year 1009 the Popes of Rome and the Patriarchs of Constantinople were unified in a common struggle against the Frankish princes and bishops, already even at that time heretics.

The Franks at the Synod of Frankfurt in 794 condemned the decrees of the Seventh Ecumenical Synod and the honorable veneration of the holy icons. Likewise in 809 the Franks introduced into the Symbol of the Faith the “Filioque” (Latin: “and the Son”); namely, the doctrine concerning the procession of the Holy Spirit both from the Father and from the Son. Now at that time the Orthodox Pope of Rome condemned this imposition. At the Synod of Constantinople presided over by Photios the Great, at which also representatives of the Orthodox Pope of Rome participated, they condemned as many as had condemned the decrees of the Seventh Ecumenical Synod and as many as had added the Filioque to the Symbol of Faith. However, the Frankish Pope Sergius IV, in the year 1009, in his enthronement encyclical for the first time added the Filioque to the Symbol of Faith. Then Pope Benedict VIII introduced the Creed with the Filioque into the worship service of the Church, at which time the Pope was stricken out from the diptychs of the Orthodox Church.

The basic distinction between the Orthodox Church and Papism is found in the doctrine concerning the uncreated nature and uncreated energy of God. Whereas we Orthodox believe that God possesses an uncreated nature and uncreated energy and that God comes into communion with the creation and with man by means of His uncreated energy, the Papists believe that in God the uncreated nature is identified with His uncreated energy (acrus purus) and that God holds communion with the creation and with man through His created energies, even asserting that in God there exist also created energies. So then the grace of God through which man is sanctified is seen as created energy. But given this, one cannot be sanctified.

From this basic doctrine proceeds the teaching concerning the procession of the Holy Spirit from the Father and from the Son, the cleansing fire, the primacy of the Pope, etc.

Beside the fundamental difference between the Orthodox Church and Papism, in the theme of the nature and energy of God, there are other great differences which have given rise to topics of theological dispute, namely:

--the Filioque, that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and from the Son with the result that the monarchy of the Father is diminished, the final equality of the Persons of the Holy Trinity is compromised, the Son is diminished in His own character in having been born, if there exists a oneness between Father and Son then the Holy Spirit is subordinated as not equal in power and of the same glory with the other Persons of the Holy Trinity, with the result that He is shown as the “unproductive (steiro) Person,”

--the utilization of unleavened bread in the Divine Eucharist which transgresses the manner with which Christ accomplished the Mystical Supper,

--the consecration of the “precious Gifts” which takes place not with the epiclesis, but rather with the proclamation of Christ’s words of institution, “Take, eat . . . drink of it, all of you . . .,”

--the view that the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross satisfied the Divine justice, which presents God the Father as a feudal lord and which overlooks the resurrection,

--the view about the “merits” of Christ which the Pope dispenses, along with the “superabundant” grace of the saints,

--the alienation and segmentation placed between the mysteries of Baptism, Chrismation, and the Divine Eucharist,

--the doctrine concerning the inheritance of guilt from the ancestral sin,

--the liturgical innovations in all of the mysteries of the Church (Baptism, Chrismation, Ordination, Confession, Marriage, Anointing),

--the practice of not communing the laity in the “Blood” of Christ,

--the primacy of the Pope, according to which the Pope is “episcopus episcoporum (Latin: the bishop of bishops) and the origin of the priesthood and of ecclesiastical authority, that he is the infallible head and the principle leader of the Church, governing it in monarchical fashion as the vicar of Christ on the earth” (I. Karmires). With this concept the Pope views himself as the successor of the Apostle Peter, to whom the other Apostles submit themselves, even the Apostle Paul,

--the non-existence of concelebration in the praxis of worship services,

--the infallibility of the Pope,

--the dogma of the immaculate conception of the Theotokos and the development of the worship of Mary (mariolatria), according to which the All-Holy Virgin is elevated to Triune Deity and even becomes a concept leading to a Holy Quaternity (!),

--the views of analogia entis (analogy of being) and analogia fidei (analogy of faith) which hold sway in the West,

--the unceasing progress of the Church in the discovery of the recesses of revelatory truth,

--the concept concerning the single methodology for the knowledge of God and of creatures, which leads to a blending of theology and epistemology.

Moreover, the great difference in practice, which points out the manner of theology, is found also in the difference between Scholasticism and Hesychastic theology. In the West Scholasticism was expounded as an endeavor to search out the meaning of all the mysteries of the faith by means of logic (Anselm of Canterbury, Thomas Aquinas). However, in the Orthodox Church hesychasm prevails; namely, the purification of the heart and the illumination of the mind (nous), towards the acquisition of the knowledge of God. The dialogue between St. Gregory Palamas and Barlaam the scholastic and uniate is characteristic and shows the difference.

A consequence of all the foregoing is that we have in Papism a decline from Orthodox ecclesiology. Whereas in the Orthodox Church great significance is given to theosis which consists in communion with God, through the vision of the Uncreated Light, then those who behold the Light gather in an Ecumenical Synod and accurately define revelatory truth under conditions of confusion. But in Papism great significance is given to the edict of the Pope; indeed, the Pope even stands over these Ecumenical Synods. Consistent with Latin theology, “the authority of the Church exists only when it is established and put in good order by the will of the Pope. Under a contrary condition it is annihilated.” The Ecumenical Synods are seen as “councils of Christianity that are summoned under the authenticity, the authority, and the presidency of the Pope.” Whenever the Pope leaves the meeting hall of the Ecumenical Synod, it ceases to have power. Bishop Mare has written, “There would be no Roman Catholics more accurate as those exclaiming, “I believe also in one Pope” than who say “I believe also in one . . . Church.”

Furthermore, “the significance and role of the bishops within the Roman church is no more than a simple personification of the papal authority, to which also the bishops themselves submit just as also do the simple faithful.” Towards this papal ecclesiology it is essentially maintained that “the apostolic authority left off with the apostles and was not passed on to their successors, the bishops. Only the papal authority of Peter, under which all of the others are found, was passed on to the successors of Peter; namely, the popes.” Along with the foregoing it is maintained by the papal “church” that all the churches of the East are secessionist and have deficiencies. It receives us as sister churches into communion by dispensation (kat’ oikonomian), since she sees herself as the mother church and sees ourselves as daughter churches.

The Vatican is an earthly power (kratos) and each pope is the wielder of the power of the Vatican. It is a matter of a man-centered organization, a worldly, indeed an especially legalistic and worldly organization. The earthly power of the Vatican was instituted in the year 755 by Pepin the Short, the father of Charlemagne –even in our own time he was recognized by Mussolini, in 1929. The source of the proclamation of papal worldly power is significant, as Pope Pius XI maintained, “the one who stands in God’s stead on earth cannot be obedient to earthly power.” Christ was obedient to earthly power, the pope cannot be! The papal authority establishes a theocracy, since theocracy is defined as subsuming both worldly and ecclesiastical authority into one concept. Today we can see theocratic-worldly power in the Vatican and in Iran.

Pope Innocent IV (1198-1216) maintained the characteristic nature of these things in his enthronement speech, “He who has the bride has the bridegroom. However the bride herself (the church) has not been coupled with empty hands, but brings therein an incomparably rich dowry, the fullness of spiritual goods and the expanses of the world’s things, the largesse and abundance of both. . . . Your contributions of the worldly things has given me the diadem, the mitre over the priesthood, the diadem for kingdom and it has established me as His representative (antiprosopo), in the garment and on the knee of which it is written: the King of kings and Lord of lords.”

Consequently great theological differences exist, which have been condemned by the Synod of Photios the Great and at the Synod of Gregory Palamas, just as it appears in the “Synodikon of Orthodoxy.” In addition also the Fathers of the Church and the local synods down to the 19th century condemn all the deceits of papism. The issue is not mollified or improved by a certain typical excuse which the pope would give for an historical error, whenever his theological views were outside of the revelation and the eccesiology is moved into an enclosed course, since of course the pope presents himself as leader of the Christian world, as successor of the Apostle Peter and the Vicar-representative of Christ over the earth, as if Christ would give His authority to the pope and He cease ruling in blessing in the heavens.

ON THE ASSUMPTION (koimhsiV)

[201] LOVERS are wont to speak of what they love, and to let their fancy run on it by day and night.

Let no one therefore blame me, if I add a third tribute to the Mother of God, on her triumphant departure. I am not profiting her, but myself and you who are here present, putting before you a spiritual seasoning and refreshment in keeping with this holy night. We are suffering, as you see, from scarcity of eatables. Therefore I am extemporising a repast, which, if not very costly nor worthy of the occasion, will certainly be sufficient to still hunger. She does not need our praise. It is we who need her glory. How indeed can glory be glorified, or the source of light be enlightened? We are weaving a crown for ourselves in the doing. "I live," the Lord says, "and I will glorify those who glorify Me." [202] Wine is truly pleasant to drink, and bread to eat. The one rejoices, the other strengthens the heart of man. But what is sweeter than the Mother of my God? She has taken my mind captive, and held my tongue in bondage. I think of her by day and night. She, the Mother of the Word, supplies my words. The fruit of sterility makes sterile minds fruitful. We keep to-day the feast of her blessed and divine transit from this world. Let us then climb up the mystical mountain, where beyond the reach of worldly things, passing through the obscurity of storm, we stand in the divine light and may give praise to Almighty power. How does He, who dwells in the splendour of His glory, descend into the Virgin's womb without leaving the bosom of the Father? How is He conceived in the flesh, and does He spontaneously suffer, and suffer unto death, in that material body, gaining immortality through corruptibility? (fqora kthsamenoV to afqarton). And, again, ascending to the Father, He drew His Mother, according to the flesh, to His own Father, assuming into the heavenly country her who was heaven on earth.

To-day the living ladder, through whom the [203] Most High descended and was seen on earth, and conversed with men, was assumed into heaven by death. To-day the heavenly table, she, who contained the bread of life, the fire of the Godhead, without knowing man, was assumed from earth to heaven, and the gates of heaven opened wide to receive the gate of God from the East. To-day the living city of God is transferred from the earthly to the heavenly Jerusalem, and she, who, conceived her first-born and only Son, the first-born of all creation, the only begotten of the Father, rests in the Church of the first-born: the true and living Ark of the Lord is taken to the peace of her Son. The gates of heaven are opened to receive the receptacle of God, who, bringing forth the tree of life, destroyed Eve's disobedience and Adam's penalty of death.

And Christ, the cause of all life, receives the chosen mirror, the mountain from which the stone without hands filled the whole earth. She, who brought about the Word's divine Incarnation, rests in her glorious tomb as in a bridal-chamber, whence she goes to the heavenly bridals, to share in the kingdom of her Son and God, leaving her tomb as a place of rest [204] for those on earth. Is her tomb indeed a resting-place? Yes, more famous than any other, not shining with gold, or silver, or precious stones, nor covered with silken, golden, or purple adornments, but with the divine radiance of the Holy Spirit. The angelic state is not for lovers of this world, but the wondrous life of the blessed is for the servants of the Spirit, and passing to God is better and sweeter than any other life. This tomb is fairer than Eden. And that I may not speak of the enemy's deceit, in the one; of his, so to say, clever counsel, his envy and covetousness, of Eve's weakness and pliability, the bait, sure and tempting, which cheated her and her husband, their disobedience, exile, and death, not to speak of these things so as not to turn our feast into sorrow, this grave gave up the mortal body it contained to the heavenly country. Eve became the mother of the human family, and is not man made after the divine image, convicted by her condemnation; "earth thou art, and unto earth thou shalt return." This tomb is more precious than the tabernacle of old, receiving the real and life-giving receptacle of the Lord, the heavenly table, not [205] the loaves of proposition, but of heaven, not material fire, but her who contained the pure fire of the Godhead. This tomb is holier than the ark of Moses, blessed not with types and shadows, but the truth itself. It showed forth the pure and golden urn, containing the heavenly manna, the living tablet, receiving the Incarnate Word of God from the impress of the Holy Spirit, the golden censer of the supersubstantial word. It showed forth her who conceived the divine fire embalming all creation.

Let demons take to flight, and the thrice miserable Nestorians perish as the Egyptians of old, and their ruler Pharao, the younger, a cruel devastator. They were swallowed up in the abyss of blasphemy. Let us who are saved with dry feet, crossing the bitter waters of impiety, raise our voices to the Mother of God at her departure. Let Mary, personifying the Church, lead the joyful strain. Let the maidens of the spiritual Jerusalem go out in singing choirs. Let kings and judges, with rulers, youths, and virgins, young and old, proclaim the Mother of God, and all peoples and nations in their different ways and tongues, sing a new canticle. Let the air resound with praise and [206] instrument, and the sun gladden this day of salvation. Rejoice, O heavens, and may the clouds rain justice. Be glad, O divine apostles, the chosen ones of God's flock, who seem to reach the highest visions, as lofty mountain tops. And you God's sheep, and His holy people, the flock of the Church, who look to the high mountains of perfection, be sad, for the fountain of life, God's Mother, is dead. It was necessary that what was made of earth should return to earth, and thus be assumed to heaven. It was fitting that the earthly tenement should be cast off, as gold is purified, so that the flesh in death might become pure and immortal, and rise in shining immortality from the tomb.

To-day she begins her second life through Him who was the cause of her first being. She gave a beginning, I mean, the life of the body, to Him who had no beginning in time, although the Father was the cause of His divine existence. Rejoice holy and divine Mount Sion, in which reposes the living divine mountain, the new Bethel, with its grace, human nature united with the Godhead. From thee her Son ascended to heaven as [207] from the olives. Let the world-embracing cloud be prepared and the winds gather the apostles to Mount Sion from the ends of the earth. Who are these who soar up as clouds and eagles to the cause of all resurrection, ministering to the Mother of God? Who is she who rises resplendent, all pure, and bright as the sun? Let the spiritual lyres sing to her, the apostolic tongues. Let grave theologians raise their voices in praise, Hierotheus, the vessel of election, in whom the Holy Spirit abides, knowing and teaching divine things by the divine indwelling. Let him be wrapt out of the body and join willingly in the joyful hymn. Let all nations clap their hands and praise the Mother of God. Let angels minister to her body. Follow your Queen, O daughters of Jerusalem, and, together with her virgins in the spirit, approach your Bridegroom in order to sit at His right hand. Make haste, Lord, to give Thy Mother the welcome which is her due. Stretch out Thy divine hands. Receive Thy Mother's soul into the Father's hands unto which Thou didst commend Thy spirit on the Cross. Speak sweet words to her: [208] "Come, my beloved, whose purity is more dazzling than the sun, thou gavest me of thy own, receive now what is mine. Come, my Mother, to thy Son, reign with Him who was poor with thee." Depart, O Queen, depart, not as Moses did who went up to die. Die rather that thou mayest ascend. Give up thy soul into the hands of thy Son. Return earth to the earth, it will be no obstacle. Lift up your eyes, O people of God. See in Sion the Ark of the Lord God of powers, and the apostles standing by it, burying the life-giving body which received our Lord. Invisible angels are all around in lowly reverence doing homage to the Mother of their Lord. The Lord Himself is there, who is present everywhere, and filling all things, the universal Being, not in place. He is the Author and Creator of all things. Behold the Virgin, the daughter of Adam and Mother of God; through Adam she gives her body to the earth, her soul to her Son above in the heavenly courts. Let the holy city be sanctified, and rejoice in eternal praise. Let angels precede the divine tabernacle on its passage, and prepare the tomb. Let the [209] radiance of the spirit adorn it. Let sweet ointment be made ready and poured over the pure and undefiled body. Let a clear stream of grace flow from grace in its source. Let the earth be sanctified by contact with that body. Let the air rejoice at the Assumption. Let gentle breezes waft grace. Let all nature keep the feast of the Mother of God's Assumption. May youthful bands applaud and eloquent tongues acclaim her, and wise hearts ponder on the wonder, priests hoary with age gather strength at the sight. Let all creation emulate heaven, even so the true measure of rejoicing would not be reached.

Come, let us depart with her. Come, let us descend to that tomb with all our heart's desire. Let us draw round that most sacred bed and sing the sweet words, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Hail, predestined Mother of God. Hail, thou chosen one in the design of God from all eternity, most sacred hope of earth, resting-place of divine fire, holiest delight of the Spirit, fountain of living water, paradise of the tree of life, divine vine-branch, bringing forth soul-sustaining nectar and ambrosia. Full river of spiritual graces, fertile land of the [210] divine pastures, rose of purity, with the sweet fragrance of grace, lily of the royal robe, pure Mother of the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, token of our redemption, handmaid and Mother, surpassing angelic powers." Come, let us stand round that pure tomb and draw grace to our hearts. Let us raise the ever-virginal body with spiritual arms, and go with her into the grave to die with her. Let us renounce our passions, and live with her in purity, listening to the divine canticles of angels in the heavenly courts. Let us go in adoring, and learn the wondrous mystery by which she is assumed to heaven, to be with her Son, higher than all the angelic choirs. No one stands between Son and Mother. This, O Mother of God, is my third sermon on thy departure, in lowly reverence to the Holy Trinity to whom thou didst minister, the goodness of the Father, the power of the Spirit, receiving the Uncreated Word, the Almighty Wisdom and Power of God. Accept, then, my good-will, which is greater than my capacity, and give us salvation. Heal our passions, cure our diseases, help us out of our difficulties, make our lives peaceful, send [211] us the illumination of the Spirit. Inflame us with the desire of thy son. Render us pleasing to Him, so that we may enjoy happiness with Him, seeing thee resplendent with thy Son's glory, rejoicing for ever, keeping feast in the Church with those who worthily celebrate Him who worked our salvation through thee, Christ the Son of God, and our God. To Him be glory and majesty, with the uncreated Father and the all-holy and life-giving Spirit, now and for ever, through the endless ages of eternity. Amen.

A Homily on the Dormition of Our Supremely Pure Lady Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary

Both love and duty today fashion my homily for your charity. It is not only that I wish, because of my love for you, and because I am obliged by the sacred canons, to bring to your God-loving ears a saving word and thus to nourish your souls, but if there be any among those things that bind by obligation and love and can be narrated with praise for the Church, it is the great deed of the Ever-Virgin Mother of God. The desire is double, not single, since it induces me, entreats and persuades me, whereas the inexorable duty constrains me, though speech cannot attain to what surpasses it, just as the eye is unable to look fixedly upon the sun. One cannot utter things which surpass speech, yet it is within our power by the love for mankind of those hymned, to compose a song of praise and all at once both to leave untouched intangible things, to satisfy the debt with words and to offer up the first fruits of our love for the Mother of God in hymns composed according to our abilities.

If, then, "death of the righteous man is honorable" (cf. Ps. 115:6) and the "memory of the just man is celebrated with songs of praise" (Prov. 10:7). How much more ought we to honor with great praises the memory of the holiest of the saints, she by whom all holiness is afforded to the saints, I mean the Ever-Virgin. Mother of God! Even so we celebrate today her holy dormition or translation to another life, whereby, while being "a little lower than angels" (Ps. 8:6), by her proximity to the God of all, and in the wondrous deeds which from the beginning of time were written down and accomplished with respect to her, she has ascended incomparably higher than the angels and the archangels and all the super-celestial hosts that are found beyond them. For her sake the God-possessed prophets pronounce prophecies, miracles are wrought to foreshow that future Marvel of the whole world, the Ever-Virgin Mother of God. The flow of generations and circumstances journeys to the destination of that new mystery wrought in her; the statutes of the Spirit provide beforehand types of the future truth. The end, or rather the beginning and root, of those divine wonders and deeds is the annunciation to the supremely virtuous Joachim and Anna of what was to be accomplished: namely, that they who were barren from youth would beget in deep old age her that would bring forth without seed Him that was timelessly begotten of God the Father before the ages. A vow was given by those who marvelously begot her to return her that was given to the Giver; so accordingly the Mother of God strangely changed her dwelling from the house of her father to the house of God while still an infant . She passed not a few years in the Holy of Holies itself, wherein under the care of an angel she enjoyed ineffable nourishment such as even Adam did not succeed in tasting; for indeed if he had, like this immaculate one, he would not have fallen away from life, even though it was because of Adam and so that she might prove to be his daughter, that she yielded a little to nature, as did her Son, Who has now ascended from earth into heaven.

But after that unutterable nourishment, a most mystical economy of courtship came to pass as regards the Virgin, a strange greeting surpassing speech which the Archangel, descended from above, addressed to her, and disclosures and salutations from God which overturn the condemnation of Eve and Adam and remedy the curse laid on them, transforming it into a blessing. The King of all "hath desired a mystic beauty" of the Ever-Virgin, as David foretold (Ps. 44:11) and, "He bowed the heavens and came down" (Ps. 17:9) and overshadowed her, or rather, the enhypostatic Power of the Most High dwelt in her. Not through darkness and fire, as with Moses the God-seer, nor through tempest and cloud, as with Elias the prophet, did He manifest His presence, but without mediation, without a veil, the Power of the Most High overshadowed the sublimely chaste and virginal womb, separated by nothing, neither air nor aether nor anything sensible, nor anything supra-sensible: this was not an overshadowing but a complete union. Since what overshadows is always wont to produce its own form and figure in whatever is overshadowed, there came to pass in the womb not a union only, but further, a formation, and that thing formed from the Power of the Most High and the all-holy virginal womb was the incarnate Word of God. Thus the Word of God took up His dwelling in the Theotokos in an inexpressible manner and proceeded from her, bearing flesh . He appeared upon the earth and lived among men, deifying our nature and granting us, after the words of the divine Apostle, "things which angels desire to look into" (1 Pet. 1:12). This is the encomium which transcends nature and the surpassingly glorious glory of the Ever-Virgin, glory for which all mind and word suffice not, though they be angelic. But who can relate those things which came to pass after His ineffable birth? For, as she co-operated and suffered with that exalting condescension (kenosis) of the Word of God, she was also rightly glorified and exalted together with Him, ever adding thereto the supernatural increase of mighty deeds. And after the ascent into the heavens of Him that was incarnate of her, she rivaled, as it were, those great works, surpassing mind and speech, which through Him were her own, with a most valiant and diverse asceticism, and with her prayers and care for the entire world, her precepts and encouragements which she gave to God's heralds sent throughout the whole world; thus she was herself both a support and a comfort while she was both heard and seen, and while she labored with the rest in every way for the preaching of the Gospel. In such wise she led a most strenuous manner of life proclaimed in mind and speech.

Therefore, the death of the Theotokos was also life-bearing, translating her into a celestial and immortal life and its commemoration is a joyful event and festivity for the entire world. It not merely renews the memory of the wondrous deeds of the Mother of God, but also adds thereto the strange gathering at her all-sacred burial of all the sacred apostles conveyed from every nation, the God-revealing hymns of these God-possessed ones, and the solicitous presence of the angels, and their choir, and liturgy round about her, going on before, following after, assisting, opposing, defending, being defended. They labored and chanted together to their uttermost with those who venerated that life- originating and God-receiving body, the saving balsam for our race and the boast of all creation; but they strove against and opposed with a secret hand the Jews who rose up against and attacked that body with hand and will set upon theomachy. All the while the Lord Sabaoth Himself, the Son of the Ever-Virgin, was present, into Whose hands she rendered her divinely-minded spirit, through which and with which its companion, her body, was translated into the domain of celestial and endless life, even as was and is fitting. In truth, many have been allotted divine favor and glory and power, as David says, "But to me exceedingly honorable are Thy friends, O Lord, their principalities are made exceeding strong. I will count them and they shall be multiplied more than the sand" (Ps. 138:17). And according to Solomon, "many daughters have attained wealth, many have wrought valiantly; but she doth exceed, she hath surpassed all, both men and women" (cf. Prov. 31:29). For while she alone stood between God and the whole human race, God became the Son of Man and made men sons of God; she made earth heavenly, she deified the human race, and she alone of all women was shown forth to be a mother by nature and the Mother of God transcending every law of nature, and by her ineffable childbirth-the Queen of all creation, both terrestial and celestial. Thus she exalted those under her through herself, and, showing while on earth an obedience to things heavenly rather than things earthly, she partook of more excellent deserts and of superior power, and from the ordination which she received from heaven by the Divine Spirit, she became the most sublime of the sublime and the supremely blest Queen of a blessed race.

But now the Mother of God has her dwelling in Heaven whither she was today translated, for this is meet, Heaven being a suitable place for her. She "stands at the right of the King of all clothed in a vesture wrought with gold and arrayed with divers colors" (cf. Ps. 44:9), as the psalmic prophecy says con- cerning her. By "vesture wrought with gold" understand her divinely radiant body arrayed with divers colors of every virtue. She alone in her body, glorified by God, now enjoys the celestial realm together with her Son. For, earth and grave and death did not hold forever her life-originating and God-receiving body -the dwelling more favored than Heaven and the Heaven of heavens. If, therefore, her soul, which was an abode of God's grace, ascended into Heaven when bereaved of things here below, a thing which is abundantly evident, how could it be that the body which not only received in itself the pre-eternal and only-begotten Son of God, the ever-flowing Wellspring of grace, but also manifested His Body by way of birth, should not have also been taken up into Heaven? Or, if while yet three years of age and not yet possessing that super- celestial in-dwelling, she seemed not to bear our flesh as she abode in the Holy of Holies, and after she became supremely perfect even as regards her body by such great marvels, how indeed could that body suffer corruption and turn to earth? How could such a thing be conceivable for anyone who thinks reasonably'? Hence, the body which gave birth is glorified together with what was born of it with God-befitting glory, and the "ark of holiness" (Ps. 131:8) is resurrected, after the prophetic ode, together with Christ Who formerly arose from the dead on the third day. The strips of linen and the burial clothes afford the apostles a demonstration of the Theotokos' resurrection from the dead, since they remained alone in the tomb and at the apostles' scrutiny they were found there, even as it had been with the Master. There was no necessity for her body to delay yet a little while in the earth, as was the case with her Son and God, and so it was taken up straightway from the tomb to a super-celestial realm, from whence she flashes forth most brilliant and divine illuminations and graces, irradiating earth's region; thus she is worshipped and marvelled at and hymned by all the faithful . Willing to set up an image of all goodness and beauty and to make clearly manifest His own therein to both angels and men, God fashioned a being supremely good and beautiful, uniting in her all good, seen and unseen, which when He made the world He distributed to each thing and thereby adorned all; or rather one might say, He showed her forth as a universal mixing bowl of all divine, angelic and human things good and beautiful and the supreme beauty which embellished both worlds. By her ascension now from the tomb, she is taken from the earth and attains to Heaven and this also she surpasses, uniting those on high with those below, and encompassing all with the wondrous deed wrought in her. In this manner she was in the beginning "a little lower than the angels" (Ps. 8:6), as it is said, referring to her mortality, yet this only served to magnify her pre-eminence as regards all creatures. Thus all things today fittingly gather and commune for the festival.

It was meet that she who contained Him that fills all things and who surpasses all should outstrip all and become by her virtue superior to them in the eminence of her dignity. Those things which sufficed the most excellent among men that have lived throughout the ages in order to reach such excellency, and that which all those graced of God have separately, both angels and men, she combines, and these she alone brings to fulfillment and surpasses. And this she now has beyond all: That she has become immortal after death and alone dwells together with her Son and God in her body. For this reason she pours forth from thence abundant grace upon those who honor her-for she is a receptacle of great graces-and she grants us even our ability to look towards her. Because of her goodness she lavishes sublime gifts upon us and never ceases to provide a profitable and abundant tribute in our behalf. If a man looks towards this concurrence and dispensing of every good, he will say that the Virgin is for virtue and those who live virtuously, what the sun is for perceptible light and those who live in it. But if he raises the eye of his mind to the Sun which rose for men from this Virgin in a wondrous manner, the Sun which by nature possesses all those (lualities which were added to her nature by grace, he shall straightaway call the Virgin a heaven. The excellent inheritance of every good which she has been allotted so m uch exceeds in holiness the portion of those who are divinely graced both under and above heaven as the heaven is greater than the sun and the sun is more radiant than heaven.

Who can describe in words thy divinely resplendent beauty, O Virgin Mother of God? Thoughts and words are inadequate to define thine attributes, since they surpass mind and speech. Yet it is meet to chant hymns of praise to thee, for thou art a vessel containing every grace, the fulness of all things good and beautiful, the tablet and living icon of every good and all uprightness, since thou alone hast been deemed worthy to receive the fulness of every gift of the Spirit. Thou alone didst bear in thy womb Him in Whom are found the treasuries of all these gifts and didst become a wondrous tabernacle for Him; hence thou didst depart by way of death to immortality and art translated from earth to Heaven, as is proper, so that thou mightest dwell with Him eternally in a super-celestial abode. From thence thou ever carest diligently for thine inheritance and by thine unsleeping intercessions with Him, thou showest mercy to all.

To the degree that she is closer to God than all those who have drawn nigh unto Him, by so much has the Theotokos been deemed worthy of greater audience. I do not speak of rnen alone, but also of the angelic hierarchies themselves. Isaiah writes with regard to the supreme commanders of the heavenly hosts: "And the seraphim stood round about Him" (Isaiah 6:2); but David says concerning her, "at Thy right hand stood the queen" (Ps. 44:8). Do you see the difference in position? From this comprehend also the difference in the dignity of their station. The seraphim are round about God, but the only Queen of all is near beside Him. She is both wondered at and praised by God Himself, proclaiming her, as it were, by the mighty deeds enacted with respect to Him, and saying, as it is recorded in the Song of Songs, "How fair is my companion" (cf. Song of Songs 6:4), she is more radiant than light, more arrayed with flowers than the divine gardens, more adorned than the whole world, visible and invisible. She is not merely a companion but she also stands at Cod's right hand, for where Christ sat in the heavens, that is, at the "right hand of majesty" (Heb. 1:3), there too she also takes her stand, having ascended now from earth into the heavens. Not merely does she love and is loved in return more than every other, according to the very laws of nature, but she is truly His Throne, and wherever the King sits, there His Throne is set also. And Isaiah beheld this throne amidst the choir of cherubim and called it "high" and "exalted" (Isaiah 6:1), wishing to make explicit how the station of the Mother of God far trancer Is that of the celestial hosts.

For this reason the Prophet introduces the angels themselves as glorifying the God come from her, saying, "Blessed be the glory of the L,ord from His Place" (Ezek. 3:12). Jacob the patriarch, beholding this throne by way of types (enigmata), said, "How dreadful is this Place! This is none other than the House of God, and this is the Gate of Heaven" (Gen. 28:17).But David, joining himself to the multitude of the saved, who are like the strings of a musical instrument or like differing voices from different generations made harmonious in one faith through the Ever-Virgin, sounds a most melodic strain in praise of her, saying: "I shall commemorate thy name in every generation and generation. Therefore shall peoples give praise unto thee for ever, and unto the ages of ages." Do you see how the entire creation praises the Virgin Mother, and not only in times past, but "for ever, and unto the ages of ages"? Thus it is evident that throughout the whole course of the ages, she shall never cease from benefacting all creation, and I mean not only created nature seen round about us, but also the very supreme commanders of the heavenly hosts, whose nature is immaterial and transcendent. Isaiah shows us clearly that it is only through her that they together with us both partake of and touch God, that Nature which defies touch, for he did not see the seraphim take the coal from the altar without mediation, but with tongs, by means of which the coal touched the prophetic lips and purified them (cf. Isaiah 6:6-7). Moses beheld the tongs of that great vision of Isaiah when he saw the bush aflame with fire, yet unconsumed. And who does not know that the Virgin Mother is that very bush and those very tongs, she who herself (though an archangel also assisted at the conception) conceived the Divine Fire without being consumed, Him that taketh away the sins of the world, Who through her touched mankind and by that ineffable touch and union cleansed us entirely. Therefore, she only is the frontier between created and uncreated nature, and there is no man that shall come to God except he be truly illumined through her, that Lamp truly radiant with divinity, even as the Prophet says, "God is in the midst of her, she shall not be shaken'(Ps. 45:5).

If recompense is bestowed according to the measure of love for God, and if the man who loves the Son is loved of Him and of His Father and becomes the dwelling place of Both, and They mystically abide and walk in him, as it is recorded in the Master's Gospel, who, then, will love Him more than His Mother? For, He was her only-begotten Son, and moreover she alone among women gave birth knowing no spouse, so that the love of Him that had partaken of her flesh might be shared with her twofold. And who will the only-begotten Son love more than His Mother, He that came forth from Her ineffably without a father in this last age even as He came forth from the Father without a mother before the ages'? How indeed could He that descended to fulfill the Law not multiply that honor due to His Mother over and above the ordinances of the Law?

Hence, as it was through the Theotokos alone that the Lord came to us, appeared upon earth and lived among men, being invisible to all before this time, so likewise in the endless age to come, without her mediation, every emanation of illuminating divine light, every revelation of the mysteries of the Godhead, every form of spiritual gift, will exceed the capacity of every created being. She alone has received the all-pervading fulness of Him that filleth all things, and through her all may now contain it, for she dispenses it according to the power of each, in proportion and to the degree of the purity of each. Hence she is the treasury and overseer of the riches of the Godhead. For it is an everlasting ordinance in the heavens that the inferior partake of what lies beyond being, by the mediation of the superior, and the Virgin Mother is incomparably superior to all. It is through her that as many as partake of God do partake, and as many as know God understand her to be the enclosure of the Uncontainable One, and as many as hymn God praise her together with Him. She is the cause of what came before her, the champion of what came after her and the agent of things eternal. She is the substance of the prophets, the principle of the apostles, the firm foundation of the martyrs and the premise of the teachers of the Church . She is the glory of those upon earth, the joy of celestial beings, the adornment of all creation. She is the beginning and the source and root of unutterable good things; she is the summit and consummation of everything holy.

O divine, and now heavenly, Virgin, how can I express all things which pertain to thee? How can I glorify the treasury of all glory? Merely thy memory sanctifies whoever keeps it, and a mere movement towards thee makes the mind more translucent, and thou dost exalt it straightway to the Divine. The eye of the intelfect is through thee made limpid, and through thee the spirit of a man is illumined by the sojourning of the Spirit of God, since thou hast become the steward of the treasury of divine gifts and their vault, and this, not in order to keep them for thyself, but so that thou mightest make created nature replete with grace. Indeed, the steward of those inexhaustible treasuries watches over them so that the riches may be dispensed; and what could confine that wealth which wanes not? Richly, therefore, bestow thy mercy and thy graces upon all thy people, this thine inheritance, O Lady! Dispel the perils which menace us. See how greatly we are expended by our own and by aliens, by those without and by those within. Uplift all by thy might: mollify our fellow citizens one with another and scatter those who assault us from without-like savage beasts. Measure out thy succor and healing in proportion to our passions, apportioning abundant grace to our souls and bodies, s fficient for every necessity. And although we may prove incapable of containing thy bounties, augment our capacity and in this manner bestow them upon us, so that being both saved and fortified by thy grace, we may glorify the pre-eternal Word Who was incarnate of thee for our sakes, together with His unoriginate Father and the life-creating Spirit, now and ever and unto the endless ages. Amen.

ON THE FEAST OF THE DORMITION OF THE ALL-HOLY THEOTOKOS

The Feast of the Dormition (Koimesis): The Feast of the Dormition (Falling asleep) of the All-holy Theotokos, celebrated on the 15th of August every year is the greatest among several others which commemorate her Blessed person and life. As such, this Feast marks the completion of her earthly life as her full participation in the salvation and eternal life which the Lord God established for us human beings through Christ. But one may ask. Is this not a contradiction in terms? Does not falling asleep imply death? The answer is Yes and No. Yes, because she truly died. No, because she did not remain in death. The Icon of the Feast of the Falling-asleep of the Theotokos depicts her body resting breathless in a bed while her soul, wrapped in swaddling clothes like a new-born baby, is upheld in the arms of the Risen and glorified Christ who stands behind the bed. This icon is the reversal of the usual icon of the Theotokos which depicts the Virgin holding Christ in her arms. Christ holding the Virgin’s soul in his arms indicates her entry into the Kingdom of Heaven which the Incarnate Christ opened up for us through his saving life and work. It indicates in the most concrete way St. Athanasius’ well known dictum: “God became human that we (humans) may be made divine.” Christ the Savior taking the soul of his Mother to Heaven marks the first resurrection, which Christians experience when they die, thanks to our Lord’s redemptive work. The full resurrection of our humanity, i.e. the resurrection of the body, will take place at the second coming of Christ which will be accompanied by the general resurrection and the last judgment of all human beings.

What happened to the body of the Theotokos? The Feast of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin does not end with her first resurrection, which is the entry of her soul into heaven. There is another mystery also connected with it which refers to her holy body. What happened to the body of the Theotokos? Why there is no tradition in the Christian Church both in East and West that mentions any bodily relics of the all-holy Mother of God, but there are traditions only about her girdle (zone) and garments (estheta and maphorion)? Apparently, according to ancient traditions, her body too was miraculously translated into heaven after its burial in Gethsemane, and was united with her soul. Indeed her tomb was found empty shortly after the burial. This tradition of the translation of the body of the Theotokos from the tomb to heaven (metathesis or metastasis in Greek, transitus in Latin) is very strong in the Orthodox Church as liturgical practice and many and important patristic texts bear witness, although sources do differ on details.

References about the Falling Asleep in the Lord of the Blessed Virgin Theotokos we can find in the works of John of Thessalonica, Theoteknos of Livias, Modestus of Jerusalem, Andrew of Crete, Germanus of Constantinople, John the Monk of the Old Lavra, John Damascene and Theodore the Studite. To these texts one could go on and add several others from the later Byzantine fathers and ecclesiastical authors of the second millennium, such as Leo the Emperor, John of Euchaita, Isidore of Thessalonica, Philotheos of Constantinople, Gregory Palamas of Thessalonica, Nicholas Cabasilas, Damaskenos Stoudites, etc. These texts point to a common tradition, although one observes differences in the details as scholars argue. They all agree, however, that the tomb of St. Mary in Gethsemane, where the body of the Blessed Virgin Mary was buried by the holy Apostles, was found empty when they opened it three days later. Here is how this ‘tradition’ is presented by Patriarch Juvenal of Jerusalem to Empress Pulcheria of Constantinople at the time of Chalcedon (AD 451) who asked for the relic of the Theotokos to be transferred from Jerusalem to Constantinople.

“There is nothing in the holy, inspired Scripture about the death of Mary, the holy Theotokos; but we know from an ancient and truest tradition that at the time of her glorious falling asleep, all the holy Apostles, who were traveling the world preaching salvation to the nations, were in an instant lifted up and brought to Jerusalem. As they stood before her, they saw an angelic apparition, and a divine chanting was heard from the higher Powers. And so, in a state of divine and heavenly glory she placed her soul into God’s hands in an ineffable way. Her body, which had received God, was carried with angelic and apostolic hymns, was prepared and laid to rest in a coffin in Gethsemane. It was there and for three days that the angelic choruses and hymns continued unceasingly. After three days, however, the angelic hymnody ceased. The Apostles were there, and since one of them –Thomas– who had been absent from the burial, came after the third day and asked to reverence that body which had received God, they opened the coffin. They could not find anywhere her much-praised body, and since all they could find were her burial swaddling-clothes and the ineffable fragrance that came out of them and filled their bowels, they closed the coffin again. Amazed by the miracle of this mystery, they could only think this: that the One who willed to be incarnated and become human from her in his person, and to be born in the flesh he who is God the Word and Lord of Glory, and who preserved her virginity incorruptible after the birth, he was also the One that was well-pleased to honor her immaculate and spotless body, after her departure from this world, [by endowing it] with incorruptibility and with a transposition (metathesis) [to heaven] before the common, and universal resurrection.”

Orthodox and Roman Catholic Doctrine: This is not the place to present in detail all the variable patristic accounts of the falling asleep of the Theotokos and assess their conclusions. In spite of differences, it is clear that they all point to the glorification of the Blessed Theotokos at her death, which marks her entry into Heaven and taking a place closer to Christ than any other heavenly or human being. The mystery of her bodily transposition which is warranted by the empty tomb is a matter of faith and piety and is based on the mystery of the Incarnation. Based on this logic that pertains to the mystery of Christ and the unique place of the Blessed Virgin Theotokos in it, it is also logical to assume that she too has experienced the resurrection of the body as a unique anticipation of the general resurrection of all humanity in the end of time. In spite of this, the Orthodox Church has not accepted the Roman Catholic dogma of the bodily assumption of the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, which was promulgated by Pope Pius XII on 1 November 1950 through his Bull Munificentissimus Deus. The reasons for this rejection have been both theological and historical. The Roman Catholic Dogma of the Assumption is based on the earlier Marian dogma of the Immaculate Conception (that the Virgin was born immaculate, free from original sin), which was promulgated by Pope Pius IX on 8 December 1854 through his Bull Ineffabilis Deus. In effect this meant that being sinless she could not and did not die but was assumed into heaven both in body and soul. For the Orthodox these Roman Catholic Marian Dogmas are rather rationalizations of piety and are not clearly warranted in the Holy Tradition of the Church. Orthodox piety and faith preserves the mystery of the blessed Theotokos along with the mystery of Christ the Incarnate God and Lord of Glory. The festal hymn of the Dormition proclaims this most clearly: “In giving birth you kept your virginity. In falling asleep you did not abandon the world, O Mother of God. You passed over into life, for you are the Mother of Life, and by your intercessions you deliver our souls from death.”

THE FEAST OF THE DORMITION AT THE TOMB OF MARY IN GETHSEMANE

The Feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos is celebrated with special solemnity at Gethsemane, the place of Her burial. Nowhere else is there such sorrow of heart at the separation from the Mother of God, and nowhere else such joy, because of Her intercession for the world.

The holy city of Jerusalem is separated from the Mount of Olives by the valley of Kedron on Josaphat. At the foot of the Mount of Olives is the Garden of Gethsemane, where olive trees bear fruit even now.

The holy Ancestor-of-God Joachim had himself reposed at 80 years of age, several years after the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple (November 21). St Anna, having been left a widow, moved from Nazareth to Jerusalem, and lived near the Temple. At Jerusalem she bought two pieces of property: the first at the gates of Gethsemane, and the second in the valley of Josaphat. At the second locale she built a tomb for the members of her family, and where also she herself was buried with Joachim. It was there in the Garden of Gethsemane that the Savior often prayed with His disciples.

The most-pure body of the Mother of God was buried in the family tomb. Christians honored the sepulchre of the Mother of God, and they built a church on this spot. Within the church was preserved the precious funeral cloth, which covered Her all-pure and fragrant body.

The holy Patriarch Juvenal of Jerusalem (420-458) testified before the emperor Marcian (450-457) as to the authenticity of the tradition about the miraculous ascent of the Mother of God to Heaven, and he sent to the empress, St Pulcheria (September 10), the grave wrappings of the Mother of God from Her tomb. St Pulcheria then placed these grave-wrappings within the Blachernae church.

Accounts have been preserved, that at the end of the seventh century a church had been built atop the underground church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, and that from its high bell-tower could be seen the dome of the Church of the Resurrection of the Lord. Traces of this church are no longer to be seen. And in the ninth century near the subterranean Gethsemane church a monastery was built, in which more than 30 monks struggled.

Great destruction was done the Church in the year 1009 by the despoiler of the holy places, Hakim. Radical changes, the traces of which remain at present, also took place under the crusaders in the year 1130. During the eleventh to twelfth centuries the piece of excavated stone, at which the Savior had prayed on the night of His betrayal disappeared from Jerusalem. This piece of stone had been in the Gethsemane basilica from the sixth century.

But in spite of the destruction and the changes, the overall original cruciform (cross-shaped) plan of the church has been preserved. At the entrance to the church along the sides of the iron gates stand four marble columns. To enter the church, it is necessary to go down a stairway of 48 steps. At the 23rd step on the right side is a chapel in honor of the holy Ancestors-of-God Joachim and Anna together with their graves, and on the left side opposite, the chapel of St Joseph the Betrothed with his grave. The right chapel belongs to the Orthodox Church, and the left to the Armenian Church (since 1814).

The church of the Dormition of the Theotokos has the following dimensions: in length it is 48 arshin, and in breadth 8 arshin [1 arshin = 28 inches]. At an earlier time the church had also windows beside the doors. The whole temple was adorned with a multitude of lampadas and offerings. Two small entrances lead into the burial-chamber of the Mother of God. One enters through the western doors, and exits at the northern doors. The burial-chamber of the All-Pure Virgin Mary is veiled with precious curtains. The burial place was hewn out of stone in the manner of the ancient Jewish graves and is very similar to the Sepulchre of the Lord. Beyond the burial-chamber is the altar of the church, in which Divine Liturgy is celebrated each day in the Greek language.

The olive woods on the eastern and northern sides of the temple was acquired from the Turks by the Orthodox during the seventh and eighth centuries. The Catholics acquired the olive woods on the east and south sides in 1803, and the Armenians on the west side in 1821.

On August 12, at Little Gethsemane, at the second hour of the night, the head of the Gethsemane church celebrates Divine Liturgy. With the end of Liturgy, at the fourth hour of the morning, he serves a short Molieben before the resplendent burial shroud, lifts it in his hands and solemnly carries it beyond the church to Gethsemane proper where the holy sepulchre of the Mother of God is situated. All the members of the Russian Spiritual Mission in Jerusalem, with the head of the Mission presiding, participate each year in the procession (called the “Litania”) with the holy burial shroud of the Mother of God..

The rite of the Burial of the Mother of God at Gethsemane begins customarily on the morning of August 14. A multitude of people with hierarchs and clergy at the head set off from the Jerusalem Patriarchate (nearby the Church of the Resurrection of Christ) in sorrowful procession. Along the narrow alley-ways of the Holy City the funeral procession makes its way to Gethsemane. Toward the front of the procession an icon of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos is carried. Along the way, pilgrims meet the icon, kissing the image of the All-Pure Virgin Mary and lift children of various ages to the icon. After the clergy, in two rows walk the black-robed monks and nuns of the Holy City: Greeks, Roumanians, Arabs, Russians. The procession, going along for about two hours, concludes with Lamentations at the Gethsemane church. In front the altar, beyond the burial chamber of the Mother of God, is a raised-up spot, upon which rests the burial shroud of the Most Holy Mother of God among fragrant flowers and myrtle, with precious coverings.

“O marvelous wonder! The Fount of Life is placed in the grave, and the grave doth become the ladder to Heaven…” Here at the grave of the All-Pure Virgin, these words strike deep with their original sense and grief is dispelled by joy: “Hail, Full of Grace, the Lord is with Thee, granting the world, through Thee, great mercy!”

Numerous pilgrims, having kissed the icon of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, following an ancient custom, then stoop down and go beneath it.

On the day of the Leave-taking of the feast (August 23), another solemn procession is made. On the return path, the holy burial shroud is carried by clergy led by the Archimandrite of Gethsemane.

Ζώντας στην Ταϊβάν στο ξεκίνημα της ορθόδοξης εκκλησίας, η αγάπη μου για τους Κινέζους έγινε μεγαλύτερη. Βέβαια είχε αρχίσει από τα φοιτητικά χρόνια και τώρα έδωσε η χάρη του Θεού να βρίσκομαι εδώ να τελώ την Θεία Λειτουργία και έτσι η χάρη και η αγάπη του Θεού να γίνονται αισθητά στην Ταϊβάν.

Συζητώντας με διάφορους ταϊβανέζους που σιγά σιγά έτυχε να γνωρίσω μου έκανε εντύπωση το ότι δεν είχαν αρκετή θα έλεγα χαρά. έγινε πιο φανερό αυτό από την παρατήρηση κάποιου φίλου όταν κοιτάζανε φωτογραφίες από τα μαγαζιά για γάμους. – πρέπει να εξηγήσω ότι ο κινεζικός γάμος γίνεται σε εστιατόριο, απλά τρώνε μαζί, η νύφη αλλάζει φορεσιές διάφορες για να δείξει ότι έχει λεφτά, δεν υπάρχει κάποια έννοια

μυστηρίου, μια απλή υπόκλιση στους προγόνους, όμως βγάζουν καλλιτεχνικές φωτογραφίες στα αξιοθέατα της πόλης ντυμένοι γαμπροί και νύφες-.
Μα αυτοί δεν γελάνε - είπε με απορία! Έχουν τόσο φόβο μέσα τους.

Πράγματι, κοίταξα πολλές φωτογραφίες και όλες δείχνουν το ίδιο. Αυτή ήταν η πρώτη μου επαφή με τον φόβο εδώ.

Σιγά σιγά ο φόβος άρχισε να μπαίνει πιο φανερά στην καρδιά μου, από διάφορες κρυφές ρωγμές και πληγές που δεν είχαν κλείσει. Βλέπετε είμαι και εγώ τώρα κινέζος, αγαπώ τόσο πολύ αυτό το λαό και αυτό τον τόπο, μου φαίνεται τόσο οικείος που κάποιοι μου λένε πως είμαι μετεμψύχωση κινέζου. Εγώ γελώ καλόκαρδα και τους λέω πως υπάρχουν και άλλες αιτίες που μπορεί να νιώθει κανείς έτσι, και όχι η μετεμψύχωση. Ο φόβος όμως μπήκε για τα καλά στην καρδιά μου όταν επισκέφθηκα την έκθεση θιβετιανού βουδισμού στο μουσείο θρησκειών. Εκεί η ευγενική μου φίλη ξεναγός μου εξήγησε τα διάφορα εκθέματα, μου είπε, βλέπεις αυτά τα τύμπανα, είναι από κρανία μικρών παιδιών και η μεμβράνη από το δέρμα

τους, αυτές οι σάλπιγγες από κόκαλα ανθρώπινα, αυτή η στολή του λάμα, είναι εξ ολοκλήρου φτιαγμένη από δέρμα ανθρώπινο και κόκαλα, από πεθαμένους φυσικά.... ένοιωσα κάτι κρύο, κάτι κακό. Ακόμα και μετά, στην έξοδο, όπου πουλούσαν μικροαντικείμενα αναμνηστικά, κάτι με σταμάτησε πριν αγοράσω, και ρώτησα. αυτή η τσατσαρούλα από τί είναι φτιαγμένη;

από κόκαλα ανθρώπινα φυσικά είπε η κοπέλα, όλα είναι από νεκρούς.... καλά είπα δεν πειράζει, θα πάρω άλλη φορά. Μου ήρθαν στο νου οι στίχοι του Τ.Σ. Ελλιοτ «όμως σε οστά ανάμεσα στεγνά σέρνεται η τύχη μαςΓια να κρατήσει ζωντανή τη μεταφυσική μας».

Και τότε σαν ένα πέπλο να τραβήχτηκε από τα μάτια μου, πολλά άρχισαν να εξηγούνται μέσα μου. Ο φόβος. Αυτός κυβερνά την κινεζική και γενικότερα την κοινωνία των ανατολικών λαών.

Ο φόβος βρίσκεται παντού. Κατ’ αρχήν ο φόβος των φαντασμάτων. παντού υπάρχουν φαντάσματα, πολλοί μάλιστα μου είπαν ότι τα είδαν κιόλας. Είναι πολύ φυσικό να πεις σε ένα ξενοδοχείο «φάντασμα!», θα σε πιστέψουν, θα τρομοκρατηθούν, θα κάψουν χάρτινα χρήματα, θα ικετέψουν το φάντασμα να μην τους κάνει κακό. Είναι πολύ χαρακτηριστικό αυτό, «σε παρακαλώ μη με βλάψεις ....... πάρε αυτά...». Στην αρχή δεν τους πίστευα μα

τώρα πια δεν είμαι τόσο σίγουρος, θυμούμενος τα συναξάρια των μαρτύρων, των Αγίων ειδικά της ερήμου, το πως χτίστηκε η Λαύρα από τον Άγιο Αθανάσιο στο Αγ. Όρος κτλ. Ναι είναι εδώ η χώρα που κυριαρχεί ο διάβολος.

Xάρη σε αυτούς που βοηθούν αυτήν την ιεραποστολή γίνεται εδώ λειτουργία, έρχεται η χάρη του Θεού. Ποια είναι αυτά τα φαντάσματα? Αυτοί που έχουν βρει βίαιο θάνατο, άλλοι που οι συγγενείς δεν τους πρόσφεραν τις απαραίτητες θυσίες, η και ετάφησαν σε λάθος ημερομηνία, η με λανθασμένο προσανατολισμό του τάφου, αλλά και διάφοροι δαίμονες, από τους πολλούς του κινεζικού πανθέου.

Είναι φανερό πόσο αβάσταχτη είναι εδώ η κυριαρχία της φύσης πάνω στην ανθρώπινη μοίρα. Το λεγόμενο φογκ σουει, δηλ. ο κατάλληλος συνδυασμός των φυσικών ιδιοτήτων ενός κτηρίου, προσανατολισμός, χώρος, φωτισμός, θέση πόρτας, παραθύρου κτλ, ώστε να βρίσκονται σε αρμονία με το λεγόμενο γινκ γιανγ, δηλ τις δυο συζυγείς δυνάμεις που ρυθμίζουν τοσύμπαν. Συνεπώς η φύση κυριαρχεί αδυσώπητα πάνω στην ανθρώπινη

μοίρα, μπορεί να σε καταστρέψει χωρίς καμία λογική, χωρίς άλλη αιτία.

Προχωρώντας βαθύτερα, στην οικογένεια βλέπουμε το αληθινό δράμα.

Πρέπει να προσφέρεις κατάλληλες θυσίες κάθε 2 βδομάδες περίπου στους προγόνους, στο τραπέζι που κάθε οικογένεια έχει στο σπίτι για αυτό το σκοπό. Αν δεν το κάνεις σωστά, η ψυχή του πατέρα της μάνας, θα γίνει πεινασμένο φάντασμα και δεν θα δεις άσπρη μέρα. Μου φάνηκε αδιανόητο αυτό για μας τους Έλληνες. Πως είναι δυνατόν να διανοηθούμε πως οι ψυχές των νεκρών μας θα προσπαθούν να μας βλάψουν, έστω κι αν δεν τους

θυμόμαστε, έστω και αν δεν τους μνημονεύουμε σωστά? Αντίθετα, σε δύσκολες στιγμές τους επικαλούμεθα κιόλας, αδειάζουμε τον πόνο μας. μετά μου πέρασε η ιδέα, χωρίς φυσικά να θέλω – ούτε μπορώ άλλωστε - να κάνω τον ψυχολόγο- πως αυτό θα μπορούσε να είναι μια υποσυνείδητη αντίδραση των παιδιών στους προγόνους λόγω της συμπεριφοράς τους. Γιατί στην κινεζική οικογένεια δεν υπάρχει προσωπική ζωή. Υπάρχει η οικογένεια πάνω από όλα, ο πατέρας αφέντης «padre padrone», η μάνα που μπορεί διαφεντεύει τη ζωή των παιδιών.
Αυτοί θα πούνε τι να σπουδάσεις, ποιον η ποια να παντρευτείς και αν δεν τους αρέσει, τη διώχνουν, μπορείς να πάρεις άλλη. Γι αυτό και ήταν κανόνας στο παρελθόν, όχι ασύνηθες τώρα, η πολυγαμία, και τώρα μάλιστα να γνωρίζουν οι σύζυγοι η μια την άλλη.
Και φυσικά δεν φιλάνε ούτε χαϊδεύουν τα παιδιά. Μετά από όλα αυτά, οι γονείς, κυριολεκτικά πεινασμένα φαντάσματα που ρουφούν τη ζωή των παιδιών σε τούτη τη ζωή, είναι φυσικό να προβάλλονται ασυνείδητα – αφού κανείς δεν τολμά συνειδητά- στην άλλη ζωή ως φαντάσματα.

Ο φόβος εκφράζεται επίσης σαν θαυμασμός προς την δύναμη, γι αυτό αν και στην αρχή δεν ήθελα να το πιστέψω, το παραδέχτηκα, όταν επισκέφτηκα ένα ναό που είναι αφιερωμένος στους ιδρυτές της σύγχρονης κινεζικής δημοκρατίας, δρ. Σαν Υετ Σαν, και Τσαγκ Καï Σεκ!!! Ναι είχαν τα αγάλματα τους στο βωμό, προσέφεραν θυσία, Γιατί είχαν δύναμη... και ναι μεν ήταν πραγματικά μεγάλοι άνδρες και έφεραν τη δημοκρατία στη Κίνα, αλλά όχι και θεοί. Όπως έμαθα δε, στην Κίνα αρκετοί λατρεύουν τον Μάο σαν θεό, παρά τις προσπάθειες της κυβέρνησης να το εμποδίσει. Ακόμα και σε σκύλο προσεύχονται, υπάρχει ναός, σε οτιδήποτε έχει δύναμη, γιατί η δύναμη είναι που μετράει εδώ. Σιγά σιγά προσπαθούμε να ξετυλίξουμε το σκοτεινό και κρύο κουβάρι του κινεζικού φόβου.

Πίσω από όλα κρύβεται ο φόβος του θανάτου. Ακόμα όταν πεθάνεις χρειάζεσαι λεφτά, γι αυτό βάζουν πολλά λεφτά στις τσέπες των πεθαμένων.

Ναι είναι αλήθεια. Και πρέπει να έχεις φροντίσει να σου γίνει καλή κηδεία,τον κατάλληλο χρόνο (μπορεί να σε κρατάνε στο σπίτι 3-4 μήνες στο φέρετρο), γιατί αν δεν γίνει, θα γίνεις φάντασμα, θα τυραννάς αυτούς που τυραννούσες στη ζωή αυτή δηλαδή. Πρέπει να έχεις βρει και τυπικά υιοθετήσει αρσενικό παιδί αν δεν έχεις. Γιατί μόνο αυτό έχει δικαίωμα να σε κηδέψει. Αγοραπωλησίες παιδιών είναι συνηθισμένο.
Και αν είσαι γυναίκακαι πέθανες ανύπαντρη, τότε γίνεται και γάμος με το φάντασμα σου.

Ρίχνουν λεφτά στο δρόμο, ο πρώτος που θα τα σηκώσει, υποχρεωτικά θα παντρευτεί το φάντασμα, σε κανονική γαμήλια τελετή......

Για μένα το πιο δραματικό στοιχείο αυτό του φόβου είναι η έλλειψη αγάπης. Είναι απίστευτο σε ένα τέτοιο πολιτισμό να υπάρχει τόσο λίγη έκφραση αγάπης. Θεωρείται πολύ κακό, αγένεια, στην πράξη δεν λέγεται ποτέ, η λέξη σε αγαπώ, μεταξύ ανθρώπων που πρόκειται να παντρευτούν!!

Ακόμα και στο πανεπιστήμιο που πάω, όταν μάθαμε αυτή τη λέξη, μας είπαν πως γενικά οι κινέζοι δεν τη λένε. Στην Ιαπωνία εισήχθη ως λέξη από την Κίνα, τον 5ο αιώνα... δεν υπήρχε....Ίσως γι αυτό και δεν τολμούν να εκφράσουν γενικότερα τα συναισθήματα τους, δεν υπάρχει χορός, τραγούδι. Η ψυχολογία θα έχει πολλά να πει για την απαγόρευση και καταναγκαστική συμπεριφορά του μη εκφράζεσθαι στην Κίνα.

Ειδικά στην Ταϊβάν υπάρχει ένας βαθύς φόβος για το μέλλον.Φοβούνται ότι η κομμουνιστική Κίνα θα επιτεθεί κάποτε και θα καταστρέψει τα πάντα. Γι αυτό και προσπαθούν με κάθε τρόπο να βρουν και δεύτερο διαβατήριο, ώστε να μπορούν να διαφύγουν στο εξωτερικό. Αυτός ο εφιάλτης πολλές φορές δεν αφήνει να σκεφτεί κανείς μακροπρόθεσμα το μέλλον της οικογένειας και της δουλειάς του.

Ο γάμος εδώ είναι περισσότερο μια ανάγκη, μια υπακοή στους γονείς, μια οικονομική συμφωνία, ένας τρόπος επιβίωσης για το μέλλον και πολύ λιγότερο μια κοινωνία αγάπης δυο ανθρώπων, τουλάχιστον όπως την εννοεί ο χριστιανισμός.
Εδώ το άτομο είναι κυριολεκτικά κλεισμένο στον εαυτό του, ασφυκτιά από τον φόβο του θανάτου και της ανασφάλειας, και έτσι κλείνεται σε ένα τάφο από τούτη τη ζωή. Πώς να αγαπήσεις μετά? Αυτός που φοβάται σκέφτεται μόνο τον εαυτό του, κυριολεκτικά αυτό είναι η γεύσητου θανάτου. Γιατί ο ατομισμός είναι θάνατος, ο θάνατος φέρνει τον φόβο

και έτσι ζει κανείς στον σκοτεινό φαύλο κύκλο το φόβου όπως λέγει οευαγγελιστής Ιωάννης,«Η τέλεια αγάπη έξω βάλλει τον φόβον....ότι ο φοβούμενος ου τετελείωται εν τη αγάπη.»

Ναι δεν υπάρχει αγάπη στην κινεζική κοινωνία. Δεν υπήρξε ποτέ για την ακρίβεια στην κινεζική σκέψη. Μόνο ο Μο Τσε, φιλόσοφος που έζησε περί το 479-381 π.Χ. μίλησε για πανανθρώπινη αγάπη, όχι σαν την χριστιανική αλλά καθαρά ωφελιμιστικής υφής, αναγκαία για την ειρηνικήύπαρξη κοινωνίας, κράτους και κρατών. Όμως η ιδέα του δεν έγινε ποτέαποδεκτή, πολεμήθηκε από τους κομφουκιστές και γενικά απορρίφθηκε από

την κινεζική κοινωνία. Πρέπει πρώτα να αγαπάς την οικογένεια σου, πολύ λιγότερο, ξεκινώντας από ομόκεντρους κύκλους τον υπόλοιπο κόσμο. Δηλ,τους φίλους, τους συμπολίτες κτλ. Λέγοντας «αγαπάς» δεν εννοούν οι κινέζοι αυτό το που εννοούμε εμείς. Θα λέγαμε μια σχέση συμφέροντος.Γιατί δεν αγαπούν ούτε τον θεό η τους θεούς.

Είναι για μένα μια συγκλονιστική ανακάλυψη ο τρόπος που προσεύχονται. Θεέ μου δώσε μου λεφτά και θα σου δώσω ένα ποσοστό! Κάνε να κερδίσω το λαχείο και θα σου δώσω τόσα τα εκατό, η θα φέρω μια γυναίκα να χορέψει για σένα, η κάτι παρόμοιο. Πέρυσι έφεραν από την Κίνα ένα μικρό λείψανο του Βούδα, ένα δάχτυλο του (αν και αρκετοί αμφισβήτησαν την αυθεντικότητα του) για προσκύνημα στην Ταϊβάν.

Χιλιάδες κόσμος πέρασε να προσκυνήσει. Όμως στην εφημερίδα είδα τον επικεφαλής μοναχό που το έφερε που δήλωνε. Σας παρακαλώ, μη ζητάτε από τον Βούδα να κερδίσετε το λαχείο, ζητήστε ειρήνη κτλ...

Οι άνθρωποι εδώ δεν αγαπούν τον θεό, δεν διανοούνται τέτοιο πράγμα. (μιλάω γενικά για την συντριπτική πλειοψηφία των κινέζων που πιστεύουν σε ένα κράμα βουδισμού, ταοϊσμού, προγονολατρείας, και προλήψεων). Οι άνθρωποι χρησιμοποιούν το θεό, επειδή φαίνεται πως έχει δύναμη που μπορούν να εκμεταλλευτούν, επικαλούμενοι τον θεό και

τάζοντας διάφορα πράγματα, για να ξεφύγουν από τον φόβο της μοίρας.

Είναι κάτι το τραγικό αυτή η έλλειψη αγάπης. Φυσικά προσπαθούν να ελέγξουν την μοίρα με το κατάλληλο φογκ σουει, δηλ την γεωμαντεία, την δύναμη των κρυστάλλων, κτλ. Επειδή η σχέση με τον θεό δεν είναι σχέση αγάπης, ίσως γι' αυτο και οι αποκρουστικές μορφές δαιμόνων και θεών στους ναούς. Είναι επίσης και οι βαθιές ενοχές, που δεν βρίσκουν διέξοδο, δεν βρίσκουν λύση, πως άλλωστε – δεν γνωρίζουν την εξομολόγηση- που

επιτείνουν τον φόβο, που προσπαθούν να εξαγοράσουν λύτρωση με δωρεές

σε ναούς.Είναι ο φόβος της τιμωρίας και της κόλασης που σε κρατάει τίμιο, είναι

οι μορφές των δαιμόνων στους ναούς που απειλούν. Οι πιο πνευματικοί άνθρωποι ζητάνε μόνο ειρήνη, αρμονία, ειρήνη γιατί ξέρουν τι σημαίνει να ζεις στο φόβο όχι όμως και αγάπη, όχι δεν ζητούν να αγαπήσουν το θεό, δεν το διανοούνται.Άλλωστε κατά τον Κομφούκιο αλλά και τον βούδα δεν έχει νόημα να αναζητάς τον θεό, να θέλεις να μάθεις ποιος είναι, δεν είναι σωστό, δεν θα το μάθεις ποτέ, είναι κακό να ψάχνεις. Κοίτα το τώρα, το σήμερα, και πως θα ζήσεις καλύτερα και μη σε ενδιαφέρει αυτό που δεν μπορείς να καταλάβεις,

άρα πολύ περισσότερο δεν έχει νόημα να αγαπάς κάτι που δεν γνωρίζεις καθόλου.

Ο φόβος γίνεται επίσης βαθύτερος λόγω των κρυφών ψυχολογικών συνεπειών της μετεμψύχωσης, της θεωρίας που κυριαρχεί στην Άπω Ανατολή. Πληρώνω αμαρτίες που δεν θυμάμαι, που έκανα σε άλλη ζωή, ζω σε ένα κλοιό κυριολεκτικά μετεμψυχώσεων, ο νόμος κυριαρχεί αδυσώπητα πάνω μου γιατί δεν μπορώ να τον αλλάξω.
Πρέπει να πληρώσω, δεν υπάρχει συγνώμη, άφεση, δεν σπάει αυτός ο κύκλος του τρόμου.

Έχω το σώμα μου μα δεν μπορώ να το αγαπήσω, σαν κινέζος, αφού δεν έχει αξία, μόνο η ψυχή έχει, το σώμα είναι η φυλακή της ψυχής. Η επίδραση της μετεμψύχωσης είναι από τις σημαντικότερες αιτίες του ελλείμματος αγάπης στους ασιατικούς λαούς. Διότι όταν μια ανθρώπινη καρδιά αγαπά, λέει στον άλλο «σε αγαπώ για πάντα». Όμως πως να διανοηθείς να αγαπήσεις για πάντα, όταν ξέρεις πως θα μετεμψυχωθείς σύντομα – πόσα χρόνια θα ζήσουμε άλλωστε- σε γυναίκα, άντρα, ζώο, θα «αγαπήσεις» πολλούς άνδρες, γυναίκες ζώα κτλ? Τότε ποια είναι η ποιότητα της σχέσεως σου εδώ?

Πίσω από όλα αυτά γίνεται φανερή η απουσία του προσώπου. Δεν υπάρχει αυτή η έννοια στην κινεζική κοινωνία, ούτε γενικότερα στις ανατολικές κοινωνίες, είναι άλλωστε η αποκάλυψη του Θεού μας, της Αγίας Τριάδος η αποκάλυψη του προσώπου. Διότι μόνο αν είμαι πρόσωπο μπορώ να αγαπήσω αληθινά.

Για τους ανατολικούς λαούς ο Θεός δεν είναι αγάπη, είναι μόνο κάθε τι που έχει δύναμη που με κάποιο τρόπο μπορώ να εκμεταλλευτώ. Ακόμα και στον βουδισμό, που θεωρείται η πιο πνευματική έκφραση της ανατολής, και μιλά για την αγάπη, έχει τους λεγόμενους μποντισάτβα – που αρνούνται να γίνουν βούδες πριν σώσουν τον κόσμο- η έννοια της αγάπης είναι συναισθηματική και όχι βαθύτερα υπαρξιακή διότι δεν υπάρχει το πρόσωπο,

η υποστατική αρχή που έλεγε ο αείμνηστος π. Σωφρόνιος. Πρέπει να σώσεις τον εαυτό σου, μόνο αυτό έχει σημασία σε τελική ανάλυση εξαφανίζοντας το εγώ στην νιρβάνα. Πρόσωπο δεν υπάρχει, είναι ένα σύνολο στιγμιαία μεταβαλλόμενων ιδιοτήτων.

Αφού δεν υπάρχει πρόσωπο δεν υπάρχει αγάπη. Είναι διαφορετικό να έχεις αγάπη και διαφορετικό να είσαι αγάπη. Ο θεός μας είναι αγάπη γιατί είναι κοινωνία τριών προσώπων. Είναι Πατέρας όχι γιατί μας αγαπά, αλλά μόνο και μόνο γιατί έχει Υιό, το δεύτερο πρόσωπο της Αγίας Τριάδος. Ο βούδας δεν ήξερε παρά μόνο τον ανθρώπινο τρόπο υπάρξεως, άτομα εν αντιθέσει, και επενόησε την θεωρία του. Όμως υπάρχει και άλλος τρόπος ύπαρξης, ο τριαδικός, το είναι εν κοινωνία. Αυτό είναι και η πιο βαθιά μας

συνεισφορά και ιεραποστολική τακτική στον κινεζικό λαό.

Οι κινέζοι μιλούν για την ενότητα, θεωρούν τον χριστιανισμό σαν διάσπαση, όμως ζουν κάτω από την βαριά σκιά του φυσικού νόμου, και μάλιστα του δυαδισμού, του γινγκ και γιαγκ, θεωριών για ενέργειες κτλ, που δεν έχουν καμία λογική στήριξη, ενώ η μόνη ενότητα είναι η κοινωνία των προσώπων που φανερώνει η τριαδική θεολογία.

Επειδή για τους κινέζους η αλήθεια δεν είναι πρόσωπο, έγινε ένα συνοθύλευμα παράξενων και αντιφατικών θεωριών.

Η θεολογία του άκτιστου φωτός είναι η μόνη σωτήρια της κινεζικής και γενικά ανατολικής σκέψης που είναι τόσο προσκολλημένη στην φύση, κατ’ εξοχήν στην Ιαπωνία. Δεν είναι η αρμονία αυτό που συνιστά κάθε ομορφιά στην φύση αλλά η Θεοφάνια, η παρουσία του άκτιστου φωτός, που έκανε τα ρούχα του Χριστού να γίνουν επίσης φως, που έκανε την βάτο φως, που έκανε το όρος Σινά φως. Το άκτιστο θειο φως είναι η μόνη σωτηρία από

τον φόβο της κόλασης, των φοβερών κολάσεων με 28 διαβαθμίσεις (στο τελευταίο πάνε οι κακοί δάσκαλοι.). Διότι για μας το άκτιστο θειο φως είναι το πυρ της κολάσεως.

Έχουμε πολλά να δώσουμε έστω και τόσο καθυστερημένα, έστω και τόσο αργά στους λαούς της ανατολής. Όταν με ρωτούν γιατί ήρθα εδώ, όταν κάποιοι προτεστάντες φίλοι, μου είπαν γιατί δεν κάνω ιεραποστολή (δηλ. να χτυπάω την πόρτα, να κρατάω μια Αγία Γραφή και να λέω «αν δεν πιστέψετε θα πάτε στην κόλαση») λέω εγώ: Δεν θέλω να κάνω φτηνό προσηλυτισμό, αλλά να δώσουμε νόημα ζωής, ελευθερίας και αγάπης στους λαούς.
Μόνο η ορθόδοξη θεολογία μπορεί να το δώσει. Μόνο μέσα στην Λειτουργία μπορεί κανείς να γίνει αγάπη, και μετά να την μεταδώσει στους γύρω του.

Χάρις στον «Άγιο Κοσμά» γίνεται η Θεια Λειτουργία στην Ταϊβάν, στο μικρό μας χώρο, -ναό- της Αγίας Τριάδος. Αυτό είναι και το κυριότερο στην ιεραποστολή. Γι αυτό εκφράζω ξανά στους συνεργάτες που είναι πίσω από ένα μοναχικό στρατιώτη την μεγάλη μας ευγνωμοσύνη, και πάντα μετά τον επίσκοπο μνημονεύω εσάς και τον πρόεδρο κ. Ασλανίδη, ελάχιστη έκφραση ευγνωμοσύνης, και μοιράζομαι μαζί σας τις εντυπώσεις και τις ταπεινές μου σκέψεις, και σας παρακαλώ όλους, εύχεστε για μένα που έχω τόση ανάγκη την προσευχή σας, που ζω σε τόσους πειρασμούς και πολέμους, από δικές μου αμαρτίες και λάθη, αλλά και σε τόση μοναξιά.

Σήμερα ,Κυριακή 19 Ιουνίου 2011, λάβαμε την παρακάτω επιστολή από τον Σεβασμιώτατο Μητροπολίτη Χόνγκ-Κόνγκ κ.κ.Νεκτάριο την οποία ευχαρίστως δημοσιεύουμε.

Το περιεχόμενο της επιστολής είναι σχετικό με το χρηματικό ποσό που αποστείλαμε στην Μητρόπολη Χόνγκ-Κόνγκ για την κατασκευή του Ιερού ναού της Αγίας Αικατερίνης στο Cilacap.

Πρός ἀποφυγήν ὁποιασδήποτε παρεξηγήσεως πού μπορεῖ νά δημιουργηθεῖ ἀπό τήν ἀνάγνωση τῆς ἀναρτήσεώς σας (Σάββατο, 18 Ἰουνίου 2011, “Ἀνακοίνωση τῆς ὁμάδος τῶν Φίλων τῆς ἱεραποστολῆς στήν Ἰνδονησία”) στό προσωπικό σας διαδικτυακό ἰστολόγιο http://ierapostoliko.blogspot.com, σχετικά μέ τήν ἀποστολή τοῦ ποσοῦ τῶν 5700 ευρώ γιά τήν ἀνοικοδόμιση Ναοῦ στο Cilacap, σᾶς πληροφοροῦμε, ὅτι ὅπως σᾶς εἴχαμε ἐνημερώσει, στήν συγκεκριμένη περιοχή λόγω τῆς τεταμένης καταστάσεως δέν εἶναι δυνατόν νά ἀνοικοδομηθεῖ Ναός οὔτε καί να ἀγορασθεῖ κάποιο κτήριο καί νά μετατραπεῖ σέ Ναό.

Σᾶς εἴχαμε ἐξηγήσει ὅτι τά χρήματα θά φυλαχθοῦν γιά τό μέλλον κι ὅτι θα περιμένουμε νά ἡσυχάσουν τά πράγματα γιά νά τά χρησιμοποιήσουμε γιά τον σκοπό τόν ὁποῖο δόθηκαν.

Τά χρήματα βρίσκονται στό ταμεῖο τῆς Ἱερᾶς Μητροπόλεως καί θα χρησιμοποιηθοῦν ὅταν τό ἐπιτρέψουν οἱ συνθῆκες.

Παρακαλοῦμε νά δημοσιεύσετε τήν ἀπάντησή μας ὥστε νά μην δημιουργοῦνται λανθασμένες ἐντυπώσεις στούς ἀναγνώστες σας.

Αγαπητοί εν Χριστώ αδελφοί.

Για μια ακόμα φορά δοξολογικές ευχαριστίες αναπέμπομε προς τον Δομήτορα της Εκκλησία μας Ιησού Χριστό και στην Υπεραγία Θεοτόκο,που μας αξίωσαν να διακονήσουμε μέχρι σήμερα,από τα μετόπισθεν, την Ορθόδοξη Ιεραποστολή στην Ινδονησία .

Ιδιαίτερα ευχαριστούμε γιατί ,στην προσπάθεια προβολής και ενίσχυσης του Ιεραποστολικού έργου στην Ινδονησία ,ανέδειξαν συνεργάτες,επωνύμους και ανωνύμους που μας εμπιστεύτηκαν και η ποικιλότροπη προσφορά τους ήταν σημαντική και καταλυτική .Μιάς προσπάθειας που ξεκίνησε ερασιτεχνικά πρίν μερικά χρόνια και με την βοήθεια του διαδικτύου έγινε ευρύτερα γνωστή.

Η Ομάδα Φίλων της Ορθόδοξης Ιεραποστολής στην Ινδονησία ξεκίνησε από την πόλη της Άρτας,πρίν αρκετά χρόνια ,διευρύνθηκε δε πανελλαδικά από τον Μάρτιο του 2008 ,όταν ξεκίνησε να λειτουργεί το ιστολόγιο-Η ΦΩΝΗ ΤΗΣ ΟΡΘΟΔΟΞΙΑΣ ΣΤΗΝ ΙΝΔΟΝΗΣΙΑ.

Βασικός σκοπός της ομάδος αυτής ήταν η προβολή του ποικίλου και τεράστιου Ιεραποστολικού έργου στην Ινδονησία και η οικονομική ενίσχυση του φιλανθρωπικού έργου των Ιεραποστολικών κλιμακίων ,κυρίως φτωχών ,που δεν είχαν οικονομικές ενισχύσεις από Ελληνικούς Ιεραποστολικούς συλλόγους.

Δεν είχαμε την οικονομική δυνατότητα ενός μεγάλου Ιεραποστολικού συλλόγου,επειδή οι διάφοροι δωρητές μας είναι άνθρωποι με χαμηλά εισοδήματα ,χαμηλόμισθοι και χαμηλοσυνταξιούχοι.

Όμως η αγάπη μας για την Ιεραποστολή και η εμπιστοσύνη στην Θεία Πρόνοια μας άνοιγε δρόμους και κατορθώσαμε με τις μικρές μας δυνάμεις να ενισχύσουμε οικονομικά φιλανθρωπικές δραστηριότητες ,που καταγράφηκαν κατά καιρούς σε σχετικές δημοσιεύσεις στο παραπάνω ιστολόγιο.

Αποφύγαμε να εμπλακούμε σε δραστηριότητες καθαρά και αμιγώς εκκλησιαστικές (π.χ. ανεγέρσεις ναών ) ,γιατί δεν θέλαμε να εμπλακούμε σε θέματα που αφορούσαν την αρμόδια εκκλησιαστική Αρχή και έπρεπε να ακολουθήσουμε τις πρακτικές εκείνες που προβλέπονται από την Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησιολογία .

(Εξαίρεση στον παραπάνω κανόνα αποτελεί η συγκέντρωση του ποσού των 5700 ευρώ ,με σκοπό την ανέγερση του Ιερού ναού της Αγίας Αικατερίνης στο Cilacap .Το παραπάνω ποσό το στείλαμε από τον Δεκέμβριο του 2010 στην Μητρόπολη Χόνγκ-Κόνγκ ,χωρίς μέχρι σήμερα να έχουμε κάποια ενημέρωση για το θέμα).

Η προσπάθεια ενίσχυσης του Ιεραποστολικού έργου στην Ινδονησία ,δεν ήταν εύκολη και η μέχρι τώρα πορεία μας είχε αρκετές δυσκολίες και εμπόδια. Ήδη από τις πρώτες μέρες της λειτουργίας του ιστολογίου –Η ΦΩΝΗ ΤΗΣ ΟΡΘΟΔΟΞΙΑΣ ΣΤΗΝ ΙΝΔΟΝΗΣΙΑ - και για αρκετό καιρό δεχτήμακε διαδικτυακές επιθέσεις από διάφορους διαφωνούντες ,που ήθελαν με κάθε τρόπο να διακόψουν την λειτουργία του. Διάφορες παρεμβολές που γινόταν στην ηλεκτρονική διεύθυνση του ιστολογίου,δημιουργούσαν τις προυποθέσεις για να σταματήσει η λειτουργία του,γεγονός που τελικά δεν έγινε.Άλλες φορές παρεξηγήθηκε η πρωτοβουλία ενίσχυσης του ιεραποστολικού έργου και ασκήθηκαν πιέσεις να σταματήσει κάθε προσπάθεια.Όμως ,με την βοήθεια του Θεού τα εμπόδια αυτά ξεπεράστηκαν.

Η ενασχόλησή μας με τα διάφορα ιεραποστολικά κλιμάκια στην Ινδονησία ,εκτός από το μεγάλο ιεραποστολικό έργο που γνωρίσαμε,

μας έφερε στο προσκήνιο και κάποιες πρακτικές και καταστάσεις ,που αρκετές φορές μας προβλημάτισαν .

Η πρωτοφανής δε οικονομική κρίση, που ταλαιπωρεί το σύνολο του Ελληνικού λαού ,μας οδηγεί στην απόφαση να ΑΝΑΣΤΕΙΛΟΥΜΕ ΚΑΘΕ ΠΡΟΣΠΑΘΕΙΑ ΓΙΑ ΟΙΚΟΝΟΜΙΚΗ ΒΟΗΘΕΙΑ προς τα Ορθόδοξα Ιεραποστολικά κλιμάκια της Ινδονησίας.

Ενημερώνουμε δε ότι το ιστολόγιο –Η ΦΩΝΗ ΤΗΣ ΟΡΘΟΔΟΞΙΑΣ ΣΤΗΝ ΙΝΔΟΝΗΣΙΑ θα συνεχίσει να λειτουργεί « άχρι καιρού»,προβάλλοντας μόνο το Ιεραποστολικό έργο στην περιοχή.

Τέλος δε παρακαλούμε τους επώνυμους δωρητές ,που δεν έδωσαν τα στοιχεία διαμονής τους ,να επικοινωνήσουν μαζί μας προκειμένου να συννενοηθούμε για την αποστολή των αποδείξεων από τις δωρεεές τους.

Στην Ορθόδοξη κοινότητα της Τζακάρτας,με την μέριμνα του π.Γαβριήλ Rehatta λειτουργεί σχολή Βυζαντινής Αγιογραφίας.

Η αγιογραφία σαν εκκλησιαστική τέχνη έχει σκοπό την εξυπηρέτηση της Εκκλησίας. Δεν είναι «η τέχνη για την τέχνη» αλλά τέχνη εκκλησιαστική και πνευματική. Πρωταρχικός σκοπός η θεμελίωση της πίστεως στις ψυχές των εκκλησιαζομένων. Αυτά που θα εκθέσει ο άμβωνας θεολογικά, αυτά θα εξηγήσει η αγιογραφία εικαστικά. Δίπλα στα ερμηνευτικά υπομνήματα των πατέρων επί της αγίας Γραφής θα παρατεθούν τα εμπειρικά υπομνήματα των αγιογράφων, δηλαδή οι εικαστικές απεικονίσεις, που θα αισθητοποιούν στο λαό την ορθή δογματική πίστη. Επίσης η ορθόδοξη αγιογραφία θα προσδώσει στην εκκλησία την έννοια του «επιγείου ουρανού εν ω ο επουράνιος Θεός ενοικεί και εμπεριπατεί» κατά τον απτότερο τρόπο.

«Ο αγιογράφος, όπως και ο ψάλτης, έχει αποστολή όμοια, εν πολλοίς, με την αποστολή του ιερέως. Όλοι αυτοί είναι λειτουργικοί υπηρέτες του μυστηρίου της σωτηρίας του ανθρώπου. Δανείζουν τον εαυτό τους στο Θεό και την Εκκλησία του, για να τελεσιουργηθεί το μυστήριο της Θείας Λειτουργίας. Γι’ αυτό οι αγιογράφοι όταν υπογράφουν σημειώνουν «χειρ τάδε» ή «δια χειρός αμαρτωλού τάδε». Όχι δηλαδή ότι αυτός είναι ο δημιουργός αλλά ότι απλώς δάνεισε το χέρι του (ή τη γλώσσα του ο ψάλτης) για να «λειτουργηθεί» το σύνολο των πιστών. Γι’ αυτό έχουμε και τις λεγόμενες αχειροποίητες εικόνες.

»Γι’ αυτό ακριβώς δεν αυτοσχεδιάζουν ούτε πρωτοτυπούν οι υπηρέτες των λειτουργικών τεχνών, αλλά ακολουθούν την παράδοση της Εκκλησίας. Έτσι και ο αγιογράφος δίνει την προσωπική του ψηφίδα, η οποία όμως δένει πλήρως με το συνολικό μωσαϊκό της Ορθοδοξίας» (Φώτης Κόντογλου).

Η ορθόδοξη αγιογραφία όχι μόνο αισθητοποιεί τα όσα διαδραματίζονται «μυστικά» στη λατρεία της αλλά και υπομνηματίζει τα ιστορικά γεγονότα της θείας οικονομίας. Εξιστορεί σκηνές του βίου του Χριστού, της Θεοτόκου και των αγίων. Αυτό το κάνει όχι μόνο για όσους είναι αγράμματοι, για να γνωρίσουν μέσα από την εικόνα τα διαδραματισθέντα (Νείλος ασκητής 5ος αιών), αλλά και για να υπομνηματίσει θεολογικά για όλους, αγραμμάτους και εγγραμμάτους, τα πρόσωπα και τα γεγονότα που σχετίζονται με το μυστήριο της θείας οικονομίας.

Ο π.Μεθόδιος με νέα επιστολή του σήμερα Κυριακή 29 Μαΐου μας ενημερώνει για την κατάσταση της υγείας της πρεσβυτέρας Μαρίας .Όπως διαβάζουμε στο γράμμα που ακολουθεί η πρεσβυτέρα συνεχίζει να νοσηλεύεται στο νοσοκομείο ,όμως η κατάστασή της έχει πρός το παρόν βελτιωθεί και μπορεί να τρώει.Το πρόβλημα όμως της υγείας της παραμένει σοβαρό και μελλοντικά πρέπει οπωσδήποτε να αντιμετωπισθεί με χειρουργική επέμβαση.

Σε άλλη επικοινωνία μας ο π.Μεθόδιος μας είπε ότι τα μέχρι τώρα έξοδα νοσηλείας της πρεσβυτέρας ξεπέρασαν το ποσό των 3100 ευρώ(37000000 ινδονησιακές ρουπίες ).

Γι αυτό μας παρακαλεί να συνεχίσουμε την προσπάθεια οικονομικής ενίσχυσης ,προκειμένου η οικογένεια του π.Μεθοδίου να αντιμετωπίσει το σοβαρότατο πρόβλημα υγείας της πρεσβυτέρας Μαρίας.

Κάνουμε για μιά φορά ακόμα έκκληση σε ιεραποστολικούς συλλόγους,ενορίες ,Μονές και σε οποιοδήποτε άλλο φορέα η πρόσωπο το οποίο αγαπάει την Ορθόδοξη Ιεραποστολή, να βοηθήσουν την πρεσβυτέρα Μαρία και την οικογένεια του π.Μεθοδίου.

Aγαπητοί αδελφοί ,Χριστός Ανέστη.

Αισθανόμαστε την ανάγκη, να ευχαριστήσουμε εκ ¨μέσης καρδίας¨ για μια ακόμα φορά τους επώνυμους και ανώνυμους δωρητές που μας έδειξαν για μια ακόμα φορά εμπιστοσύνη και ανταποκρίθηκαν στην διαδικτυακή έκκληση για οικονομική βοήθεια στην οικογένεια του Ορθόδοξου Ιεραποστόλου π.Μεθοδίου Sri Gunarjo στο Βoyolali της Κεντρικής Ιάβας,λόγω της σοβαρής ασθένειας της πρεσβυτέρας Μαρίας.Ηδη από τις πρώτες δωρεές συγκεντρώθηκε το ποσό των 1050 ευρώ που το αποστείλαμε στον π.Μεθόδιο για να καλύψει τα έξοδα νοσηλείας της πρεσβυτέρας στην Μονάδα Εντατικής Θεραπείας για τις πρώτες πέντε μέρες.

Ιδιαιτέρως ευχαριστούμε τον νεοσύστατο ιεραποστολικό σύλλογο-ΠΟΡΕΙΑ ΑΓΑΠΗΣ- από την Λάρισα ,που ανταποκρίθηκε και αυτός άμεσα στην έκκλησή μας και έστειλε το ποσό των 1500 ευρώ για να καλυφθούν τα έξοδα νοσηλείας της πρεσβυτέρας για την δεύτερη εβδομάδα νοσηλείας της στην Μ.Ε.Θ.

Υπενθυμίζουμε ότι στο κράτος της Ινδονησίας ,οι παροχές υπηρεσιών σε θέματα υγείας είναι επί πληρωμή και με πολύ υψηλό κόστος ,για τα οικονομικά δεδομένα της περιοχής ,γι΄αυτό και η θνησιμότητα στην περιοχή είναι πολύ μεγάλη και σε άτομα νεαρής ηλικίας.

Η πρεσβυτέρα Μαρία συνεχίζει να νοσηλεύεται στην μονάδα εντατικής θεραπείας .Η κατάσταση της υγείας της είναι σταθερή μεν αλλά κρίσιμη.Η προσπάθεια που έγινε εκ μέρους των γιατρών να βγει από την Μ.Ε.Θ απέτυχε γιατί παρουσίαζε συχνές λιποθυμικές κρίσεις .

Έτσι λοιπόν το πρόβλημα παραμένει και η οικογένεια του π.Μεθοδίου βρίσκεται σε πολύ δύσκολη θέση.Γι΄αυτό : Κάνουμε για μια φορά ακόμα έκκληση σε ιεραποστολικούς συλλόγους,ενορίες ,Μονές και σε οποιοδήποτε άλλο φορέα η πρόσωπο το οποίο αγαπάει την Ορθόδοξη Ιεραποστολή, να βοηθήσουν την πρεσβυτέρα Μαρία και την οικογένεια του π.Μεθοδίου.

Αγαπητοί εν Χριστώ αδελφοί.Χριστός Ανέστη.

Με "άλγος καρδίας" πληροφορηθήκαμε την επιδείνωση της κατάστασης της υγείας της πρεσβυτέρας Μαρίας του π.Μεθοδίου Sri Gunarjio .Η πρεσβυτέρα Μαρία πάσχει από χρόνιο σοβαρό καρδιακό πρόβλημα ,που της δημιουργεί αρρυθμίες και την ταλαιπωρεί πολλά χρόνια.

Πρίν περίπου δύο χρόνια σοβαρή επιδείνωση του προβλήματος την ανάγκασε να νοσηλευτεί σε νοσοκομείο του εξωτερικού.Η φαρμακευτική αγωγή όμως που ακολουθούσε ,της δημιούργησε μεγάλο πρόβλημα στο στομάχι (έλκος) με αποτέλεσμα να διακοπεί .

Η πρεσβυτέρα νοσηλεύεται τώρα στο νοσοκομείο ,αλλά προκειμένου να αντιμετωπιστεί το σοβαρότατο πρόβλημα επιβάλλεται επειγόντως η χειρουργική επέμβαση και η τοποθέτηση βηματοδότη .

Τα χρήματα όμως που απαιτούνται δεν τα διαθέτει η οικογένεια του π.Μεθοδίου .
Έτσι ο π.Μεθόδιος απευθύνεται σε όλους εμάς που μπορούμε ,έστω και με ελάχιστη εισφορά να βοηθήσουμε.

Ίσες ευκαιρίες για τους φτωχούς κατοίκους των απομακρυσμένων νησιών της Ινδονησίας

Παρά την αυξανόμενη οικονομική άνθηση και τους πλούσιους φυσικούς πόρους στην περιοχή, περίπου το 1/3 των Ινδονησίων, ζει κάτω από το όριο της φτώχειας.

Το Atubul Dol είναι ένα από τα πιο απομακρυσμένα χωριά της Ινδονησίας. Βρίσκεται στο νησί Yamdena στη νοτιοανατολική πλευρά της χώρας, πιο κοντά στην πόλη Darwin της Αυστραλίας, παρά στην πρωτεύουσα Jakarta. Με την πλούσια φύση και τις ερημικές παραλίες της, η Yamdena μοιάζει σαν παράδεισος. Αλλά για τους ντόπιους, αυτός ο παράδεισος έχει το κόστος του. Παρότι η Ινδονησία έχει τεράστιους φυσικούς πόρους και είναι μέλος της G-20, αυτή η ευημερία δεν είναι ευδιάκριτη σε περιοχές όπως το νησί Yamdena.

«Είμαι πολύ ανήσυχος, όχι μόνο για τα παιδιά μου, αλλά και για όλους όσους ζουν σε αυτό το χωριό», δηλώνει ο ηγέτης του Atubul Dol, Alexander Snyompwaim. Και συμπληρώνει: «Δεν έχουμε τις απαραίτητες ευκαιρίες και υπηρεσίες, επειδή είμαστε ένα μικρό χωριό. Χρειαζόμαστε βοήθεια».

Η υπεύθυνη της UNICEF στην Ινδονησία, για την ελονοσία, Dr. Olivi Silalahi, κάνει τακτικά τη διαδρομή προς τη Yamdena, ταξιδεύοντας με αεροπλάνο, αυτοκίνητο, πλοίο και με κανό. Είναι ένα πολύπλοκο ταξίδι, αλλά πολύ γρηγορότερο απ' ότι ήταν στο παρελθόν. «Μέσα στα τελευταία χρόνια, οι πτήσεις έχουν βελτιωθεί. Μπορούμε να φτάνουμε κοντά στο νησί αεροπορικώς, σε καθημερινή βάση. Παλιότερα χρειαζόταν να περιμένουμε μία ή δύο εβδομάδες», λέει η Dr. Silalahi.

Το γειτονικό χωριό Lorolun, παρέχει υγειονομική φροντίδα στους κατοίκους του Atubul Dol και άλλων χωριών, που δεν έχουν τους πόρους για να δημιουργήσουν δική τους κλινική.

«Πριν, η υγειονομική μας υπηρεσία ήταν εντάξει, λειτουργούσε, αλλά ήθελε βελτίωση. Από τότε που ήρθε η UNICEF όμως, τα πράγματα έγιναν πολύ καλύτερα», λέει ο επικεφαλής του Κέντρου Υγείας του χωριού Lorolun, Agustinus Jabarmase. Και προσθέτει: «Τώρα, από το δικό μας κέντρο υγείας, κάθε μήνα παρέχουμε υπηρεσίες σε αυτά τα απομακρυσμένα χωριά».

Η Ινδονησία περιλαμβάνει παραπάνω από 17.500 νησιά και η μεγάλη έκταση του αρχιπελάγους είναι ένας από τους λόγους που δεν συμμετέχουν όλοι οι πολίτες της στην οικονομική έκρηξη που παρατηρείται στη χώρα. Συγκεκριμένα, περίπου το 1/3 του πληθυσμού ζει κάτω από τα όρια της φτώχειας.

«Η Ινδονησία πρέπει να χρησιμοποιήσει τα χρήματα που έχει για να υποστηρίξει την επίτευξη των Αναπτυξιακών Στόχων της Χιλιετίας με ισότητα, γιατί σε διαφορετική περίπτωση, οι ευκαιρίες που θα χαθούν θα είναι οπωσδήποτε τεράστιες», υπογραμμίζει η εκπρόσωπος της UNICEF στην Ινδονησία, Angela Kearney.

Η εκπαίδευση είναι ένας τομέας, όπου οι ευκαιρίες για βιώσιμη ανάπτυξη έχουν χαθεί. Τα περισσότερα παιδιά στην Ινδονησία πηγαίνουν στο δημοτικό - το ποσοστό εισαγωγής στην πρωτοβάθμια εκπαίδευση είναι γύρω στο 85% - όμως λίγοι είναι εκείνοι που συνεχίζουν στη δευτεροβάθμια εκπαίδευση. Τα παιδιά οικογενειών με χαμηλό εισόδημα, αντιμετωπίζουν το πιο σοβαρό πρόβλημα.

Η UNICEF, εργάζεται με την κυβέρνηση της χώρας στην κατανομή των πόρων, με τέτοιο τρόπο ώστε να ενθαρρύνονται οι πιο μειονεκτούσες οικογένειες να κρατούν τα παιδιά τους στο σχολείο.

Η βελτίωση των ποσοστών της Ινδονησίας στη μητρική, παιδική και βρεφική θνησιμότητα, κρύβουν επίσης μια σειρά σημαντικών προκλήσεων. Περίπου το 1/5 των παιδιών ηλικίας κάτω των 5 ετών, είναι λιποβαρή. Τα 2/3 των αγροτικών νοικοκυριών, δε διαθέτουν επαρκείς εγκαταστάσεις υγιεινής. Και το AIDS, παραμένει μια σταθερή απειλή, ειδικά στις ανατολικής περιοχές.

Μέσα στα επόμενα πέντε χρόνια, η UNICEF σχεδιάζει να δουλέψει με τους συνεργάτες της για να εξασφαλιστεί πως τα κέρδη της χώρας από την ευημερία θα μοιράζονται ισότιμα σε όλους.

«Από πολλές απόψεις, η Ινδονησία είναι πολύ τυχερή. Έχει τεράστιους πόρους κι έτσι η δουλειά μας στη UNICEF, είναι να υποστηρίξουμε την κυβέρνηση στη διαχείριση αυτών των πόρων», λέει η κα Kearney. Και συμπληρώνει: «Το κόστος αν δεν το κάνουμε, υπερβαίνει κατά πολύ τα οφέλη που θα έχουμε αν το κάνουμε».

Χωρίς κέντρο υγείας, χωρίς τηλεφωνική υπηρεσία και με μόνο 12 ώρες ρεύμα την ημέρα, η ισότητα δεν θα έρθει τόσο σύντομα για τους κατοίκους του Atubul Dol.

«Αυτό είναι το χωριό μας, η γη μας, το σπίτι μας, το μέρος όπου γεννηθήκαμε. Και με ή χωρίς καλές υπηρεσίες, είμαστε ευτυχισμένοι που ζούμε εδώ», τονίζει ο ηγέτης του χωριού, κ. Snyompwaim. Και καταλήγει: «Εξαιτίας της κατάστασής μας, πραγματικά χρειαζόμαστε υποστήριξη από την κυβέρνηση ή άλλες οργανώσεις, για να «χτίσουμε» το χωριό μας και να το κάνουμε ισότιμο με άλλα μέρη».

Δύο νεαρά κορίτσια
που εργάζονται στη σεξουαλική βιομηχανία της Ινδονησίας

Χιλιάδες παιδιών εργάζονται στη σεξουαλική βιομηχανία.
Στην Ινδονησία υπολογίζεται πως 100.000 παιδιά και γυναίκες πέφτουν θύματα διακίνησης (trafficking) κάθε χρόνο. Η παιδική πορνεία παρουσιάζει αύξηση και το ένα τρίτο αυτών που απασχολούνται στη σεξουαλική βιομηχανία είναι κάτω των 18 ετών.
Οι βαθύτερες αιτίες συμπεριλαμβάνουν τη φτώχεια και την έλλειψη ευκαιριών για τους νέους, τη χαμηλή θέση των γυναικών, την υψηλή ζήτηση στη βιομηχανία του σεξ, τα φθηνά εργατικά, την ελλιπή αστυνόμευση, τις διακρίσεις και τις συρράξεις. Έρευνες που διενεργήθηκαν στην Ανατολική Ασία, συμπεριλαμβανομένης της Ινδονησίας, διαπιστώνουν πως η διακίνηση των παιδιών είναι επικερδής και καλά οργανωμένη επιχείρηση και συνδέεται με εγκληματικές δραστηριότητες και τη διαφθορά. Επιπλέον, ξεπερνά τοπικά σύνορα, διεξάγεται παρασκηνιακά, επομένως είναι δύσκολο να καταπολεμηθεί.


	Θεραπευτικό θέατρο. Η Ντέβι και η μικρότερή της αδελφή, Γιάνι (τα ονόματα των παιδιών έχουν αλλαχθεί) ζουν στη Σουρακάρτα, μια πόλη 1.000.000 κατοίκων στην Ινδονησία. Μαζί με εννιά ακόμη εφήβους φίλους τους έγραψαν και παίζουν στο θεατρικό έργο «Έκα» που αφορά ένα κορίτσι που το απήγαγαν και πουλήθηκε στη σεξουαλική βιομηχανία. «Η παράσταση βασίζεται στην πραγματική μας ζωή», μας λέει η Ντέβι, τώρα 21 ετών. «Ένας προαγωγός έκλεψε την Έκα από το χωριό της και την πούλησε σε ένα πελάτη, αφού αρνήθηκε να κάνει σεξ μαζί του τη βίασε. Στο έργο ένας φίλος της προσπαθεί να τη βοηθήσει βάζοντας ένα φύλακα-άγγελο να τη σώσει.» Η ιδέα για το έργο είναι του "Kakak" (ΜΚΟ που συνεργάζεται με τη UNICEF στη Σουρακάρτα). Το θέατρο χτίζει εμπιστοσύνη και είναι ένας αποτελεσματικός τρόπος εκστρατείας ενάντια στην εμπορική σεξουαλική εκμετάλλευση των παιδιών. Το "Kakak" που στα Ινδονησιακά σημαίνει "μεγαλύτερος αδελφός" προσφέρει καταφύγιο, ψυχολογική στήριξη και ελπίδα σε 150 θύματα σεξουαλικής εκμετάλλευσης, κυρίως κορίτσια. Συγκλονιστικές μαρτυρίες. «Για να αντιμετωπίσουν την φοβερή ζωή που πρέπει να υπομείνουν, το 90% των παιδιών που εμπλέκονται στην πορνεία γίνονται ναρκομανείς. Το στίγμα, το χαμηλό μορφωτικό επίπεδο, οι ελάχιστες επαγγελματικές ευκαιρίες και η έλλειψη υπηρεσιών επανένταξης είναι μερικοί λόγοι που κάνουν δύσκολο στα κορίτσια να ξεφύγουν από τη ζωή αυτή. Μας πήρε τρία χρόνια για να σώσουμε την Ντέβι και τη Γιάνι,» μας λέει ανώτερο στέλεχος του ιδρύματος. Η Γιάνι ήταν 15 χρονών όταν την παρέσυραν με ψεύτικες υποσχέσεις για μια καλή δουλειά και σπουδές. Μετά από ένα μακρύ ταξίδι με αυτοκίνητο προς άγνωστη κατεύθυνση, βιάσθηκε από ένα μεσήλικα Ινδονήσιο που την άφησε αναίσθητη από το ξύλο όταν αντιστάθηκε. Πουλήθηκε σε οίκο ανοχής όπου τη φύλαγαν νύχτα-μέρα. Αντίστοιχη είναι και η ιστορία της Ντέβι. «Ο προαγωγός μου σταμάτησε να μου δίνει χρήματα και μου έδινε μόνο ναρκωτικά, γινόμουν κάθε μέρα και χειρότερα. Ζούσα από το ένα δωμάτιο ξενοδοχείου στο άλλο, οπουδήποτε ζητούσε κάποιος πελάτης, εδώ στη Σουρακάρτα ή και στη Τζακάρτα». Τρομοκρατημένες και ντροπιασμένες η Γιάνι και η Ντέβι έγιναν δύο ακόμα από τα εκατομμύρια νεαρών κοριτσιών και αγοριών που εισέρχονται στην πολλών δισεκατομμυρίων δολαρίων αγορά του σεξ σε όλο τον κόσμο. Με την υποστήριξη της οργάνωσης, μετά από πολλούς αγώνες και οι δύο αδελφές απομακρύνθηκαν από την βιομηχανία του σεξ. Η Ντέβι είναι τώρα πίσω στο σχολείο και σπουδάζει σύμβουλος για παιδιά θύματα σεξουαλικής εκμετάλλευσης, η Γιάνι θέλει να αρχίσει μια δική της οργάνωση για νέους. Το θεατρικό έργο "Έκα" είναι η μεγαλύτερη επιτυχία τους, έχουν κάνει παραστάσεις για κράτη-δωρητές, για τις αρχές, για πολιτικούς και σε φεστιβάλ τέχνης σε μεγάλες πόλεις. Το έργο της UNICEF. Για κάθε παιδί που σώζεται υπάρχουν χιλιάδες ακόμα που παραμένουν παγιδευμένα στην πορνεία. Η UNICEF συνεργάζεται με τις αρχές και άλλες οργανώσεις όπως το "Kakak", για να καταπολεμήσει την εμπορική σεξουαλική εκμετάλλευση και διακίνηση των παιδιών. Προωθεί την πρόσβαση στην εκπαίδευση, επαγγελματικό προσανατολισμό για παιδιά που εγκαταλείπουν το σχολείο, παιδιά που ζουν στους δρόμους ή νέους που κινδυνεύουν από άλλες μορφές εκμετάλλευσης. Η ανάρρωση και η επανένταξη είναι επίσης ουσιαστικής σημασίας για τέτοια παιδιά. Η UNICEF υποστηρίζει την εκπαίδευση παιδικών ψυχολόγων, κοινωνικών λειτουργών και δασκάλων για να βοηθήσουν αυτά τα παιδιά. Επίσης χρηματοδοτεί ειδικούς για να εκπαιδεύσουν προσωπικό που εργάζεται σε κέντρα διαμετακόμισης και δημιουργεί "ανοιχτές τηλεφωνικές γραμμές" για παιδιά θύματα διακίνησης. http://www.unicef.gr

Νέα επιστολή μας έστειλε ο π.Ιωάννης (Fr. Yohanes Bambang Cahyo Wicaksono) από την Surabaya της Ανατολικής Ιάβας.

Με την επιστολή αυτή μας ενημερώνει πως γιόρτασαν την Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα και το Πάσχα οι ορθόδοξες Κοινότητες του Αγίου Δημητρίου στο Mojekerto και του Αγίου Νικολάου στην Surabaya της Ανατολικής Ιάβας.Eκτός από τις ακολουθίες των ημερών πραγματοποιήθηκε και μία φιλανθρωπική εξόρμηση στις φτωχογειτονιές της Ορθόδοξης Κοινότητας του Αγίου Δημητρίου κατά την οποία μοιράστηκαν τρόφιμα σε φτωχούς της περιοχής.Ένα μέρος των εξόδων της δραστηριότητας αυτής τα ανέλαβαν οι Φίλοι της Ιεραποστολής στην Ινδονησία με χρήματα που στάλθηκαν από την Ελλάδα.(Φωτογραφίες δημοσιεύονται παρακάτω)

Η Ορθόδοξη κοινότητα του Αγίου Νικολάου στην Surabaya δημιουργήθηκε το 2008 ,αριθμεί περίπου 70 μέλη αλλά δεν διαθέτει ναό.Για τις λατρευτικές εκδηλώσεις χρησιμοποιείται ένας χώρος ,που παλιά ήταν γκαράζ και ανήκει σε ένα μέλος της Ορθόδοξης Κοινότητας,

Μιά νέα σημαντική είδηση από τον π.Ιωάννη είναι και η δημιουργία της πρώτης Ορθόδοξης Κοινότητας στο νησί Sulawesi .Στις 14 Μαίου θα βαπτιστούν οι 6 πρώτοι Κατηχούμενοι από το Menado που θα αποτελέσουν τον πυρήνα της πρώτης Ορθόδοξης Κοινότητας εκεί.

Επίσης ο π.Ιωάννης ξεκινάει την κατασκευή του πρώτου Ορθόδοξου Νηπιαγωγείο στο Menado.Γι΄αυτό μας παρακαλεί να γίνουμε αρωγοί στην νέα αυτή σημαντική Ιεραποστολική προσπάθεια του.

Through this Letter, we would like to inform you that St. Nikolaos Orthodox Church in Surabaya has finished The Pascha Service very well, and many people come in that service.

During the holy week, We also distributed Rice, noddle, sugar to the poorest who live around St. Demetrios Orthodox Church. Sunday Palm until the crucifixion of Christ service we did in St. Demetrios Orthodox Church in Mojokerto, and peak celebration namely : Pascha, We celebrated in St. Nikolaos Orthodox Church in Surabaya

Just need you to know that St. Nikolaos orthodox community has been built in the year 2008, and began from zero and now St. Nikolaos has 70 members, and when we were doing the Pascha service, the whole members of St. Nikolaos Orthodox Community has come, even the place that we are using for this divine liturgy of Pascha could almost not accommodate people who come in that service.

On the other hand, you need to know that the place that we are using for the divine liturgy and gathering of St. Nikolaos Community is still borrowing from one of Our St. Nikolaos Orthodox Community namely : Mr. Stefanus Hendra.

So base on that, We are dreaming and planning to have our own Orthodox Church, so that we will feel free in doing our Church Activities. Therefore big our hope to Our Orthodox Brothers and Sisters to help us so that the Orthodox Church can be built in the central City of Surabaya namely the second big city after jakarta in Indonesia.

Without your support and help, impossible the orthodox Missionary work can be developed nicely especially in Java Island. THerefore Our hope to you is to support and to help so that the Orthodox Missionary work can be done nicely and the name of God can be glorified.

To develop the Orthodox Missionary work in Indonesia, we are not just stopping in Surabaya, but also tried to open the New Orthodox Community in North Sulawesi Island, and on May 14, we will baptize 6 persons into our Orthodox Church, and this is as our Orthodox embryo to build the Orthodox Church there.

Our Mission in Menado beside Surabaya, not only to build the orthodox Community, but also to help their education, therefore to start helping them in Education, we will dig the foundation of Our Orthodox Kindergarten in Modoinding - North Sulawesi Island ( Menado ) and the name of Our Orthodox Kindergarten will be " Aghia Wacana Orthodox Kindergarten of St. Nikolaos", so that on july, the children will be able to enter and begin to study in their New Orthodox Kindergarten.

And For detail information in relationship our Orthodox Missionary work in Menado along with some reports, we will give after I came to Menado on May 5, 2011.

Με κατάνυξη γιορτάστηκε η Κυριακή των Βαίων στον ναό της Αγίας Αικατερίνης στο Βoyolali της Κεντρικής Ιάβας.Επίσης μετά την Θεία Λειτουργία ο π.Μεθόδιος τέλεσε την βάπτιση τεσσάρων Κατηχουμένων ηλικίας 24 έως 58 ετών και δύο μικρών παιδιών ηλικίας δύο ετών.Το ένα από τα δύο μικρά παιδιά είναι ένα μικρό κορίτσι, ορφανό από μητέρα .Τα έξοδα της βάπτισης των έξι νεοφώτιστων ανέλαβαν οι Φίλοι της Ιεραποστολής από την Ξάνθη.
